CPL is cyberathlete professional league, basically just a large arse gaming competitions. This sort of stuff happens in Koera all the time, with, well, you guessed it; StarCraft.
I think they should televise it. For those with an interest in the games, it can make for interesting viewing. I've enjoyed watching StarCraft games on teh interwebs, and I would love to see it with a professional commentator pointing out tacticts and the like.
well ive competed in a few cpl's myself.. and tbh when the media get involved... it just helps the whole atmosphere.. and everyone gets more excited.. plus depending on the game.. its soooo much fun to watch... and even more so when tsn or ign are shoutcasting... i think yea it definetly should be :) and it actually is in korea.. with wcg :D ... the rest of the world needs to catch up :P
I personally would care about which games were televised, as a Halo tournament would be rather boring for me. As would CS and various other games which don't exactly involve much skill to play.
I'd prefer seeing RTS games, and any RTS/FPS games, such as Iron Grip. I think those would be the most amusing, as they tend to involve more skill and foresight of the opponent's moves than in an FPS. Racing games would also just be horribly boring. NASCAR is already boring, the last thing we need is a version where the cars won't crash into each other, spin out, and burst into flames. Those are the things that I normally would look for in a race, anyways.
MMORPGs..? Well, what would be the point? Watching people walk past the screen screaming: "Lolzz,, n00babf" just a bit less intelligent sounding? I'd hate to watch a party go on a quest to do something.
Currently, I can't think of any other gametypes, as it's rather late. Personally, I'd most prefer an RTS/FPS game the most, with RTS following behind. An FPS might be okay, but I dread playing CS in Spectator mode. Perhaps if the camera that showed the action had an amazing prediction coding and was able to place it in the best places to view the best action parts, then I might like it, but there's not enough interesting stuff in FPSes, as they all are repeated at least once every hundred or so games, so it'd be boring for me. Perhaps if the game had gigantic maps and involved small groups of people, or even single people, to navigate around it, then I may be more interested...Hidden: Source would be perfect for televised action, though. It's so very suspenseful. Dystopia...Not so much, as it's a bit fast-paced and is much like any other FPS (Just beautified beyond belief and much more interesting.)
It'd prolly be the only show i'd watch. Arena kinda did this but they sucked at it, all it is now is like 5 episodes all of which are re-runs, that and the guys that play on it are newbs.
When I was in Korea they had 2 channels that seemed to broadcast starcraft tournaments 24/7, and it was suprisingly entertaining to watch.
If they were to have something like that here it would have to be some kind of skill based game like warcraft or starcraft Lord_elendil is right about Mmorpgs and stuff. No one would want to follow someone while they built of their character over months and months. It's great just to tune in and watch a random action packed battle of some sort.
well basicly all they show are games that require skill.. being that its all form cpl or wcg.. because they are basicly tournaments for the best gamers in the world.. on certain games :) and watching the finals.. between 2 of the best players in the world.. 2 15 minute rounds of hardcore 1v1 action .. now that is tense and ALOT of fun :) hehe
yes as long as its not on G4(i cant stand them anymore, idk y) or MTV, i think Spike does already, with Fresh baked videogames and gamehead, just crappy timeslots.
Well, there are of cause some games suited better to be televised than others.
Most games, especially FPS with more than a few players, will have a problem with finding the right camera placement.
The problem is that the action usually takes place several places at once, as opposed to any ballgame (soccer, american football, handballm, volley) where the cameras never have to move away from the center of the action, which is the ball.
For that reason I would prefere non-live transmissions, so that the "camera" crew gets time to choose the best cameras to follow to show the action.
Apart from that, many games also have the problem that only people that play those games will be entertained by watching them. That would be the case with for example CS or Unreal Tournament.
But people watch both golfing, chess and cycle sport anyway, so I guess they will watch CS as well
The games I would enjoy the most to watch would be RTS. It would be fairly easy to manage the camera real-time as long as it is a 1v1.
Sports games? Forget them. We got live sport at the television already. And too much of it in my oppinion.
In dont like watching people play, its boering. Like this show i saw in Germany they were showing some German Pros in Counter Strike and this is what it sounded like:" Yes today is a good day in DE_Dust and the players are very exited for the first match Live." "Yes Dominik, it is a very fine day for some smoke grenades or AK 47s and the 1st round is off." "XXX324 is at a great start as he gets owned by Bierwurst762" "JagerHoney gets a SIG550 from a dead CT and BOOM! gets shot in the head by N00Bluv" "Now its a 2 on 2 and Bierwurst has planted the bomb at A" "N00Bluv takes a shot to the face and KleinerSchnizel disarms the C4" "Team Schwein Has won the first round." Now Imagine that 24/7 and in german.
I'd be fun, I enjoy watching replays from time to time of other ppl playing. A good commentary is a must. And Stay away from cheesey stuff like oh Head shot shotystyles! Professional feeling would be a necessity.
"Now Imagine that 24/7 and in german."
I would still prefere that to some of the stuff that are shown on television.
Like full-length Tour de France, or 4 hours of cooking. Or low-budget manga animated series.
watching people play games is a dumb enough idea, but factor in that those players aren't even playing for fun but for some stupid cash prize thus sapping any fun out of the games they are playing and you have a tv show with 0 viewers.
It would be great, depending on the commentary. You'd have to get someone who gets easily excitable. "He feints, spams some mp5 rounds...HE SCORES! WHAT A MOVE! Unbelievable! You've NEVER seen a grenade used like that! Let's see that in SLOW MOTION!" (imagine nearly being screamed into the mic)
It should be on tv, i find it quite intresting to look how top players play, and i think that it would encourage more little computer sublings to play more sport computer games.
Cool, but I dont see the benefit of doing that, its like whatchig paint dry

lamest question ever, keep so called 'professional' gamers away from me in every possible way
Whats CPL! First comment! XD
What the hell is it?
Watching other people playing games on the TV would be boring.
Watching sport on the TV is fairly boring as it is.
no if i see a guy playing resident evil it is great but if i see a guy playing Counter-strike or sport games its sucks !
CPL is cyberathlete pro league :-P
yeah it would be cool to see games on the telly :)
well ive competed in a few cpl's myself.. and tbh when the media get involved... it just helps the whole atmosphere.. and everyone gets more excited.. plus depending on the game.. its soooo much fun to watch... and even more so when tsn or ign are shoutcasting... i think yea it definetly should be :) and it actually is in korea.. with wcg :D ... the rest of the world needs to catch up :P
It should be, and we're the ones to do it!
www.esportstv.com
:)
As long as MTV doesnt do it again I would be glad to see CPL, ESWC, WEG, WCG, any of them on TV, as if I dont follow them online anyhow.
YAAAAY.... let's go watch mroe people "pwn" each other in Halo. Fun didly day.
I voted yes. Just to be voting yes.

it would be prity groovy but some games like CSS for example r crap to watch
There used to be a show on G4TV which was called ARENA it was kind of like this.
totaleh boring
CPL would be good on G4TV. :)
Guild Wars would be great to see on tv.
Televise the various pvp championships between top guilds, with commentators, would be great.
I wouldn't mind seeing gaming on TV at all...
But Arena was how your not supposed to do it, considering that a lot of the teams on that show sucked
Mmorpgs are absoulte **** to televise.
RTS game that we all know well would be fun, something like C&C or WC3 or homeworld 2.
It'd prolly be the only show i'd watch. Arena kinda did this but they sucked at it, all it is now is like 5 episodes all of which are re-runs, that and the guys that play on it are newbs.
hell yes. they just need to show the right games, and not Super Smash Brothers Melee, or whatever :S

Yeah, I HELLA agree for the sports part, but gamers would be delighted!

Yeah, I guess the commentators will need some practice to make it interresting...
I dont want to watch some noob on the TV. Id rather play a game myself.
I hate people who call them selfs professional. They aren't and nor will they ever be. They could be destroyed by many every day players.
I'd be fun, I enjoy watching replays from time to time of other ppl playing. A good commentary is a must. And Stay away from cheesey stuff like oh Head shot shotystyles! Professional feeling would be a necessity.

"Proud to be a Geek"
It would be nice to see. Seeing CS or UT on TV problably will make the same sucess as football or other sport.
Stay cool people
