Well I like a bit of both, but when music is going I tend to get little work done so I choose "peace and quiet"

Double this. Often with music but sometimes I just need the silence ( if hunting those really pesky bugs hiding deep inside >.=.< )

I like the way the music was in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, it was slow and silent when you were just sneaking around. Then it was all pumping if you got spotted.

I agree with that but even though I can take longer while listening to music, I find that if its the right kind of music I can be inspired and make better maps. Because of that I chose with music.

I generally find I tune out when modding and barely even realise my music is on... until I discover that I'm humming it or headbanging...

I'll second that. When modding I do listen to music, sometimes music tracks from the very game I mod.

I'd like to say music, but if i'm honest with myself I never get work done when it's on. Work 10 times better in quiet.

When I game, depending on the game, the sounds/music the game has is good enough since I need piece and quiet to kill my enemies.

However, when I am coding or developing a website I highly enjoy listening to my (personal opinion of course) kick-*** music.

^_^ Although I was divided, I voted on "pumping music".

Music, with headphone ... my PC is much too loud that I could even think of working 'In peace and quiet'.

While gaming I usually have some music in the background (it makes you a lot more reckless to capture that flag when you're listening to rock music :P) unless it's a very tense game, requiring all my concentration and where hearing is important (Swat 4 for example).

I can't study with music on, but when I'm on the train and someone's talking loudly, I listen to my music because it's familair and thus, less distracting.

music helps a lot to concentrate. however the type of music changes depending on the game or work to do: if I have to shoot like a damned, the better is music rhythms and fast, if it is a strategic iss better something like .... military march! for working is better a quiet song.

My mind feels faster with anything that doesn't need 100% brain capacity, like playing games, working, etc. When no music- Things take longer time to be done.

Music 4EVER!!!

I tend to have music on occasionally, if I'm in the mood. Generally I don't - but if it's on, I tend to phase it out anyway, so it's just kind of lack background noise.

I voted "peace and quiet". Sometimes I listen to (other than game) music but that doesn't happen very often. I think silence helps me to concentrate while working (eg. on a mod) and it's also good to be without music while testing a game, mod or addon as then you can check if the sound effects work properly. When playing a game, the only music I usually listen to is the game's own background music.

Music's sounding through my speakers often while modding, but close to none when gaming - so the sum is peace and quiet, I guess.

This poll really needs a "Depends on what I'm doing" option. If I'm busy with my nose to the grindstone in Hammer mapping, I like to have background music - I'll go through 5-6 albums by a given artist at a time and not really pay attention to it.

However, if I'm doing design stuff, or anything that involves a lot of thinking and writing, I usually turn the music off (unless it's something extremely non-invasive, like ambient).

I almost never listen to music while gaming.

Usually when I game, playing PC games, I like to listen to the music of the game. But if I'm doing work, music of my own is good to have as well. Sometimes I put on a movie just for ambiance while I'm working...

Just recently I have realized that I play and mod much better with music going. I have a pretty big variety of music so no matter what kind of game I am playing I have SOMETHING to go along with it. My favorite thing is games that have a music player built in, so you don't have to listen to ingame music if you have your own, and you still get sound effects perfectly.

If the game I'm playing has music in it (and I've never played one that hasn't had any), then that's the only music I'll listen to, because the in-game music is designed to correspond with what's going on in the game. For example, if there's suspense, then there's suspenseful music.

But when modding or otherwise working, music can sometimes motivate you, and other times distract you. For me, listening to music while working gives me something to try to tune out, which makes me concentrate harder. And when you concentrate harder, you get more done.

Some music can't be tuned out, like techno. So instead of tuning it out, you use it to motivate yourself.

And, oh yeah, I voted peace and quiet.

Depends on the game.
Lots of voice acting, or stealthiness (Oblivion, CSS): no music.
Fast-paced shooting (UT99): Angelspit (or other suitably high-speed techno industrial).
Slower games, other music.
Timeshift: Tegan & Sara (XD).

I listen to Electronic music because it usually doesn't have as many annoying lyrics to sing along with. Without lyrics, a song is generally less distracting. Ambient music is really good for this, and even helps give me new ideas while working. When it comes to adding sound in game, though, then the music is off!

There's nothing like playing some Unreal listening to some Jackal and Hyde :D

Or any type of breakbeats.
Save drum and bass.
Just don't likely care for it.

Music kind of kills the thousand voices made by thinking and gives me chance to concentrate on one subject. If I need to come up with new ideas I'll be with silence, because then like a supernova goes off in my head bringing up thousands of subjects, ideas and other thoughts.
