Post news Report RSS X-COM UFO for HL2 is around the corner

I didn't want to post in main news until there was no real content for HL2. But the time has come to make things a bit more public :). There was a mod called X-COM LastHope for HL1 around 2004. Saddly it was never finished. Few months ago, I restarted the mod by porting most of the model for HL2.

There was a mod called X-COM LastHope for HL1 around 2004. Saddly it was never finished. Few months ago, I restarted the mod by porting most of the model for HL2. Made some new maps and all the coding needed for a playable version. At the current state, it is better then the HL1 version ever was. It already has 2 main elements of the original game (Interception - Battlescape) with the 3rd (Strategy) is getting ready.

When all three phases are done, it will be a semi-persistent blend of various game types. The gameplay will consist of strategic decisions and lots of action as both the aliens and the xcom fight till the end. You know it is Cydonia or Bust, but you need to capture alien commanders, research and build an Avenger and evade going bankrupt in the meantime. However, this time, the Aliens are played by flesh and bone players instead of AI. So the outcome of the war is not evindent, like it was in the old UFO game ;).

Until everything is welded together you can make some geoscape battles and try to intercept UFOs in the public pre-alpha release, available for download! Here are Some of the recent screenshots from the current game:

If you find yourself lying on a table and paralized, while strange lights are going around, that is another mission failed... Don't let it happen.

Best regards

good going
but, when taking screenshots,
remove the hud, and remove the "netgraph" thingies. we don't care about your FPS.

I'd rather call it armoury. You can choose whatever you like as long as there is at least one piece on stock. The stock is now random generated, but later it will be influenced by research and production values you set in the strategy phase. There are some restrictions thou. The more you take, the slower you move. You can load up max 7 main weapons, 16 grenades and 20 mags. In this case by the time you reach the end of the ramp the map will be half over :). You may also loose your equipment due to getting KIA or MIA. The value of the captured equipment will increase the other side's account balance.
It comes up every time the server starts a new map, and goes away after 30 secs. If you joined after the armoury time is up, you get standard equipment. In the optimal case, each map is played once then new crash site loads up. However that doesn't really help players with slower connections. So the maps will restart a number of times before one side achieves victory on the given site.
Before you all get hot about the current version, keep in mind that it is just a playable pre-alpha. Nowhere finished or polished. I just released it so you can walk on the once isometric maps of UFO and have some quick battles for fun.

Yes FPS. It will be released unile the ill fated Alliance and more xcom-ish unlike the crappy Enforcer.
My dev scheadule contains three states:
- Make the game playable and feature ready (reach alpha state)
- Make the pretty (beta release)
- Make the game fun (full version)
As you can see the mod is in the 1st stage where looks is not the top priority. Also it is basically a one man project so I either map or code or hassle with models. Since I'm mainly a coder I do what I do best. I assure you, the code looks nice :D.
I know the maps are a bit flat (so were the UFO maps) but there will be around 200 or more of them at the final version. It would take some time to random-generate and distribute maps for each battles, therefore the number of more or less different maps will emulate the "fight around the globe" feeling.

I like it, the graphics make it look like the way the original game looked.
