Moving to another Engine.

Posted by on

Hello everyone!

First of all, I would like to wish you all a happy new year,
I hope you are all healthy and doing well.

After I had been very unmotivated to create something for battlefield2 for a long time
but didn't want to give up my favorite hobby, I decided to port conflicts into another engine.

First, I worked with the new Arma Reforger engine for a few weeks and looked at the basics of the tools.
Very well done, especially when it comes to the AI.
However, it was clear that it would be a Bohemia-related project on this engine, just like a new mod for Arma Reforger.

After thinking about it for a while, I decided to go with the unreal engine,
precisely because I had already worked with version 4 for several months in the past.

So, i spent a few euros and bought a source code for a conquest (capture flags) based game.
75% Code (everything that cannot be seen visually) has already been done.

My plan is to build a game similar to Battlefield 2 so that I don't have to give up my favorite hobby and can work without limitations. I'll publish the whole thing for free and see where it goes :)

I won't change the way I work, so anyone who can play bf2 mods in good settings
will also be able to play Conflicts2 without any problems (thats one of my goals).
I'll try to keep things lowpoly but of course a bit adjusted to a new engine.

The game is already running, AI is also in-game (placeholder UE models),
hand grenades, medikits, ammobags and much more is already in the game and works just fine.

The very best thing is, the network code works and you can already play online/network both pvp and with or against bots.

I've been working on a menu (already working just need some optical love) and the first maps for a few weeks now.

Here are three very early wip mapeditor screenshots:

I'm going to create a page on indiedb.com soon and take it from there.

Its possible to use your moddb.com account there, thats nice :D

So, next newspost will be on Indiedb then. Cheers :D

Congrats on taking the first (and hardest) step of becoming an indie game dev! Best of luck on your adventure ahead :) It also would be worth starting a page on IndieDB, ModDBs sister site:

Good luck with your new project. It will be fun, for sure!

So, if you know UE4 engine, you can also try to make mods for Operation: Harsh Doorstop. Or maybe you're not interested.

Honestly, I tried OHD and from a SP point of view it was a train-wreck!
And from what I've heard, multiplayer is full of hackers and there's no anti-cheat.
I honestly feel that your project will be much better.

Wow - that´s almost like a dream come true: BF2 on another engine that uses multiple cores! But what about all these gorgeous weapons and vehicles you can find in the addon section of BF2 (or in other mods) - can they also be ported to your new UE4 engine based game? Will the animations stay the same? There is so much great stuff in BF2, created by modders - I´m curious what can be ported and what not.
But anyways, thank you for all your fantastic work, you really kept BF2 alive and I still enjoy all your gorgeous maps (which won´t change in the future, I´m sure) :)

The most models cant be used because of the copyrights etc, but there a lot of models out there made by modders like all the BSS stuff.

Iam sure i can use some of these. Also this project is just a few weeks old now, not even tried to get some people on board so far. So, iam sure things will come together. At the end of the day its about to have fun with that what iam doin - pretty sure going indie was the right decision.

Soon as the indiedb page is up, ill try to find some more people to join this project.

Well iam not done with modding BF2, still have some stuff to finish ;)

This sounds like a fantastic project. Love the screenshots!
As a sp only player I hope that the ai will be as good as BF2. I'm yet to find a sp game that has ai like BF2's, and I've tried a lot!

Good luck and buon lavoro!

Thanks buddy :D

Its the same for me, i really love the BF2 sp/coop and modding it.

Thats why iam making this, for me its not about to reinvent the wheel i just want a working platform for my creations.

Also the fact, if this project gets released some day, people can also make custom maps etc as its unreal engine based.

Some good days ahead :)

Wow, cool man.

As fare as i understood you wouldn't make your mod attched to Bohemia?
Just saying, because the road to Arma 4 is via the Reforger's Enfusion engine,
so your mod would work then with Arma 4. Kinda cool.
A full game on UE even better, but you have to mantain the game wholesome, big project.

And what about the UE licence cost?

All the best for your project

Yeah, reforger is pretty great. Iplayed the game a lot and worked with their tools a bit. But at the endof the day i think going with ue was the right decision.

As its still a hobby to me, it will be freetoplay :)
