Each zone is guarded by some sort of creature. For example in this video, a spider blocks a cavern entrance. Collecting enough nectar allows passage through these barriers opening routes to new zones that have more things to discover. But trying to enter these news zones without full nectar, will only bounce the player away in disappointment. Always go full nectar.
