Greetings pilgrims! It’s been a long time once again. While we’ve been somewhat active on some of our other social media platforms, we’ve sadly been unable to put out a big news article since last year so we’d like to thank you for your patience and enthusiasm. The patience won’t go unrewarded as today we’re going to announce a couple exciting things that I’m sure will get you all thrilled.
Firstly, although we’ve shared a lot of the visuals of Chapter 1, I think you’ll agree that gameplay has been scarce and I believe it’s time to change that. Before walking you through the major changes and overhauls Trench Foot has gone through over the year, we’ll let the upcoming X minutes of uninterrupted action-packed gameplay do the talking first.
The first difference you might notice is the HUD. It doesn’t need to be said that every game needs a fitting HUD as it can contribute a lot to the game’s visuals. That’s why we’ve spent a great amount of effort over the past few months working on a new design. Inspired by retro shooters of the 90s but modernized and adapted to suit Trench Foot’s needs, the “fancy” variant, as we like to call it, comes with a lot of flare while still maintaining clarity. The “minimalist” one is an alternative for people who prefer to keep things simple and crystal clear. Whether you want to be stylish or efficient, the choice is yours.
Ever since adding the Machinesword, a need for a fitting melee combat system arised. Taking inspiration from classics like Dark Souls, we’ve taken the meaning of up close and personal to the next level. Putting up your guard is a basic but vital instinct to survival and it’s only natural for a battle-hardened veteran like Master Templar to be able to stop any swing coming at him. Not only that, but if you manage to utilize his skills to the fullest, you can gracefully slap away the hand of Satan with your hand of God to neutralize the enemy for enough of a duration to deliver the righteous killing blow. Be careful though, it comes at a cost as Master Templar is still a human who is prone to exhaustion. It won’t be easy, but getting the blocking and parrying down will make you feel the true power of his swordsmanship.
Of course we won’t be giving you a cool toy to play with without brand-new heretics to test it on. Expect to see hordes of wretched fodder for the grinder like these chumps over here.
Along with the melee combat overhaul, we’ve redesigned the firearms to feel more immersive and rewarding. The effects of recoil look and feel smoother while the accuracy of weapons now respond to your posture in combat and how you handle them. Crouching will give you an advantage at longer ranges, but it also means you’re less mobile. Controlling your shots can be slow, but it will reward you with pinpoint accuracy for those sweet bloody headshots. Climbing ladders will have a penalty on your stability and as a result, is not an ideal spot to be in when under heretic fire. When the time comes, we expect you to go out there and show those infidels how a templar handles a gun!
It’s no lie that the rising intensity of Trench Foot has been taking its toll on our PCs with all the chaos raging uncontrollably and it’s our responsibility to handle it. All that fog, explosions and smoke only look good when you can actually see them in motion and not in a slideshow. Taking this into account, a lot of work has gone into not only optimizing the VFX, but also improving them at the same time. Major things like weather and weapon VFX have seen a considerable upgrade in addition to simple details like embers of fire. As for the hordes of heretics and the army of God to meet them, they’ve become more efficient at dishing out pain and suffering with AI optimization. Hopefully players with older PCs will have a much better time running the game now, while people with workhorses can crank the settings up to allow for unlimited amounts of visual flare.
That concludes the progress update for now, but we’re not done here yet. A plethora of new features is cool and all, but how do we know if it works? By testing it of course. And who better than the players themselves to test the game that they’re going to play. Starting next week, we’ll be beginning beta testing! If you'd like to have a chance at it, selection will be held over at our Discord server where 45 people will be chosen randomly. This is the perfect opportunity to get your hands early on the massively refined world of Cretu so don't miss it! Join us there for more details.
And with that being said, we’ll be saying our goodbyes for now. Loads of hard work await us so wish us luck as we slave away at our labor of love. Until next time!
