Post news Report RSS So, how large will Midgar be?

Recent work provides the answer! A map is now available.

Posted by on

Hey, everyone. I hope you're not getting too impatient! Recently, I've been trying to think of a way to determine somewhat accurately Midgar's approximate size. More specifically, how many Oblivion game cells it should occupy. I've come up with a solution that seems to work. If you can think of another way, I'd like to hear it.

Final Fantasy VII: Mako Dawn, Mako Dusk

The above image shows the structure of Midgar's central plate (as seen from the slums) and the rendition of it I'm working on. The enhanced blue spot on the small left image is actually train cars. Notice how the space between two columns is about two cars wide. ...and, it looks like there's 24 columns around the whole structure. Using that information, and my own passenger cars (scaled by oblivion's character height) I've arrived at an area for the central plate.

So, finally:
Final Fantasy VII: Mako Dawn, Mako Dusk
That's essentially a map of the mod. I can't take credit for the line drawing, but it's overlayed on the grid representing Midgar's world space. Each white outlined box is an Oblivion cell. The total area for Midgar proper will be 361 Oblivion game cells, or 13 miles. There'll be a lot of outlying terrain, too.

...and, here's the region as it looks right now:
Final Fantasy VII: Mako Dawn, Mako Dusk Final Fantasy VII: Mako Dawn, Mako Dusk
In essence a deep empty pit, but it gives an impression of where things will be placed. This update might not seem like a lot, and there's much work ahead. But it does give the mod a little more direction, now that there's an idea of the area we're going to fill.
...nothing's set in stone, of course!

(buried)

FF7 is so massively over-rated.

I will kneel, and beg the developers of this mod. Please, stop. I beg of you. FF7 needs to die...it is a huge factor in bringing the gaming community down to retarded levels, even lower than they are currently.

It was a fun game, but that's all. It was not revolutionary, it was not the best ever, and it's fans are insane on entirely different levels. I've read news articles about people being beaten to near death for insulting FF7. It's crazy.

I beg of you...please...please don't make this.

FFVIII, the under-rated, superior to FFVII, Final Fantasy.

Short list of better RPGS:

Breath of Fire 3
Any of the Chrono games
Legend of the Dragoon(Albeit, it did come out a year or two later, so it had that advantage, but still, it was superior in almost all aspects)

And that's just a few I can name off the top of my head, RPGs at that.

Don't feed the Milkbride. Obvious troll is obvious.

Interesting mod, by the way, but sounds like a whole lot of work.

I consider myself a pretty strong critic of FFVII. I wasn't all that impressed by the compilation. It's the setting that really appeals to me, in fact. Oh, I have a lot of respect for FFVIII and the Chrono games. ...now, legend of the dragoon! I couldn't stand its music. :p

I beg to differ. FF VII is a game that has lasted in many RPGers hearts for quite sometime. I applaud what this mod team is trying to do and cannot wait for their for their interpretation of the game.

Nice work.

Wasn't there a part on the train near the start where Jessie explains the whole train system to Cloud? I thought she said something about the size and scale...? Or maybe it was just the scale of the recreation.

Ohh, I forgot about that. Haha. I just saw the scene using an emulator. It only mentions that the plates are 'about 50 metres above the ground'. That could be useful. :)

Well it does state the SCALE of Midgar in comparison to the model shown in the train when it explains the routing system(1/20,000 or so). Jessie states those two things, Height and SCALE. but true... as far as anything else nothing more was stated other than the Sectors used to have names. Description is so very vague, I guess I'll just have to do more research on that :P

Keep up the good work Industrial!

I really dont see this mod going anywhere.

Dont get me wrong, i would love to see this mod succeed, but not on oblivions engine, i dont think it will do the mod justice using oblivions engine, maybe cryengine2 perhaps, but i just dont see much flexibility when using oblivions.

I cant put my finger on it, but something seems just wrong using this engine. I may be the only one to critisize the look of the character model shown, but i just dont see FF in it at all.

The reason we chose Oblivion had a lot to do with the way it lets you interact with characters, areas, and how the quests and factions work. That Blender 3D can export Oblivion meshes was also important. I'm not that familiar with Cryengine, though... maybe you could explain specifically why it'd be better?

I see, well i was particular going towards the graphical aspect of the game, I see what you mean about the player interaction, but on a graphical note, i just see the world of FFVII being depicted better with cryengine better.

Since you seem to be going for mainly an interactive experience with the player and characters i see how oblivions could be better. After thinking it over i could see many more complications with cryengine since i dont think it could player interaction as easily as oblivions.

I guess im afraid of feeling like id end up playing oblivion again, just in a FF world. And i never liked oblivions world since they didnt create it by hand, although im sure this will be much better.

Have you played Morrowind? It's just like Oblivion (in terms of how you interact with the characters/world), but MUCH better. And, your chief complaint about Oblivion is all its autogenerated content. Everything was done by hand in Morrowind. This project was originally intended as a Morrowind mod, actually. We upgraded to Oblivion because Morrowind's engine is getting out of date. It's still a Morrowind mod, spiritually! If that's possible. :)

Actually, I did play morrowind, and still look at it as superior to oblivion, minus the graphics.

I guess i have no reason to doubt the future of the mod now :)

I never doubted this mod to begin with, its just the look of the characters that i think i fear, as the one shown looks too similar to oblivions characters. I think its mainly that i will see too much oblivion in it and thats where my fear lies. I may be one of the few ppl that thinks oblivion as being bland and a very boring game. then again, i also consider cames like call of duty 4 and WAW as a noob oriented sprayfest as it didnt require any tactics and skill, just a hold the trigger and point game (as opposed to the games that made the series what it is today...cod/UO and cod2...they consolized great games)

I'm already hitting the models and conceptual design behind these NPCs and Monsters, alongside some buildings. Give me a heads up on which ones you'd like me to work on, Thanks.

Some sketches will be up soon!
