Progress has been chugging along on Zombie Zoo and here are a few bits of evidence that we haven't been spending the last few days poking ourselves with sharp objects or staring straight ahead whilst drooling. We save that sort of thing for our tragically brief and uncommon periods of leisure time. Before we get to that, however, seeing as this is the first news update we've posted I feel we might as well get briefly acquainted. I'm semicomatose and I'm doing some of the modelling, texture work, and animation (among a million other things) on this here modification. I'm a member of a team of fellow students at Brock University in scenic St. Catharines, Ontario and this mod is the product of a practical digital media production course at said university. My fellow team members are kombatbaby, SGritter, Kingmook and Andrea (who is yet to set up a Moddb account). Anyway, on to the media. We have a pair of boxing gloves I've been working on and kombatbaby's raccoon model along with a badass brochure for the zoo, compiled by kombatbaby with text lovingly penned by SGritter.

Boxing Gloves Boxing Gloves World Model Zombie Raccoon

Brochure Side A Brochure Side B

Next on the docket is some video. There are two basic animation tests, one for the fish and one for the raccoon. Also, a video of me running around trying out the boxing gloves. Keep in mind these are all very much works in progress. You may have noticed your spirit being roused by the sweet tunes playing on top of these videos. That music is a beautifully schlocky composition by SGritter that can be enjoyed sans visual aides below the videos.

Nice, I like the modeling and the music is awesome.
The boxing gloves could use a bit different code though, and more powerful animations.
Nice job!

Hey Silverfisk, we appreciate all the positive feedback.

What exactly do you mean by different code? At the moment this weapon is behaving like a crowbar (we still need to change the impact decal). Is there a better way to do this?

It needs a completely new animation and probably some modifications to how the crow bar works so it uses a different animation for each punch as if you were using boxing gloves. Right now it looks very synthetic an cheesy.

I was referring specifically to the c++ code underneath? Or was this not what you were initially referring too?

lawls, I'm not sure what he meant by "different code underneath it" either.

But what I will say is that there should be some sort of delay between the time you click the punch button, and the attack hits.

I know there's some "DelayedAttack" function that they used for the alternative fire of the AR-2 in half life 2. But I haven't looked at it yet.

And I know that there are some parts of the TF2 related code in the OB-SDK, I saw some TF2 animations in the ACT_TABLE, and maybe valve included some of the code for their melee weapons in tf2. I know that some of those melee weapons had a short delay between when the attack is started and when it hits.

This would give you a little more time to make more powerful looking animations.

We do need to work on the timing between button press and weapon fire (changing weapon velocity and such). I'll look up DelayedAttack, if not i can just make a delay function.

Thx for the comments

All of them in my opinion need more darastic animatios. I mean seriously, THEYRE ZOMBIES! Souldnt they be going spastic?! As for the gloves, it looks like less of a hit and more of someone knocking on a door. Its still all really cool though :D Fluff Muzac is perfect lounge music :)

I think the boxing glove animations are still a work in progress, at least one would hope so. As for the animals, they are just showing off the idle animations right?

Yes they're just idle animations and not final ones at that. The two zombie animation tests are just kombatbaby and myself making sure we have the method for importing custom animations down properly.

I like the style of the characters and the gloves, and the music too! The world models and textures are just temporary though, right?

The animations do look quite placid for zombies. But, if this were a game directed at children then the animations aren't so bad because they don't look violent! They suit the music as well.

Keep up the good work!

The animations are just tests. That being said, the models and textures for the zombies and boxing gloves are pretty much final. This being a student project and all, we're married to having the thing brought into this world in a somewhat finished form by April next year so graphical polish isn't a super high priority. Even with that in mind, gritty realism and hard-as-nails violence are not the end goals of this mod. Children are not specifically the audience we have in mind but a tits 'n guns gaming experience this is not going to be, short of some kind of drastic change in our end vision between now and release.

Definitely the most realistic depiction of a zombie fish I have ever seen outside of real life. ;D
