One of the hardest things to do as a mod / game development team spread all over the world is to keep in touch and keep conversations running in an orderly manner. Hell, it is even something we struggle with behind the scenes at Mod DB which is why we put a LOT of thought into the just launched private messaging system.
So how will it help with inner-team conversations and what is different from the old v3 private messaging system? Quite a bit actually:
- Threaded conversations: Private message conversations are threaded, which means they are essentially private little forum threads between you and the receiptents. This means that you could start a private conversation between all of the modellers on your mods team so that they can share and show off the work each other has done. It also means gamers can easily contact your mod team, and you know if someone from your team has already answered the question saving you doing so also. It also keeps all of the messages in one organized group, and not spread among 50 different email messages
- Group contact: Now that Mod DB has groups, you can contact any group linked with any game, mod, engine etc and all of the members who are in that group and ranked "contributor and above" will receive the private message, saving you the hassle of hunting down individuals to contact
- HTML support: Full HTML is supported, so you, your friends and fellow developers can send images, detailed updates and more to one another
- Email notification: If you are offline and receive a private message, an email notification will be sent (which you can turn off in your profile settings), so you never miss an important message again
- Autosuggest friends: When sending an private message your friends will appear in the TO box so you don't have to remember their exact username
- Search / filterable: You can search and filter PMs you have both sent and received, so you can find exactly what you want without wading through heaps of old crap.
To get started using the PM system you can view your inbox, sent items or compose a new message. Just look out for the "little message" icon on the top left corner of Mod DB, which indicates how many unread PM's sit in your inbox. Oh and no PM's from Mod DB v3 have been copied over because they don't use the new threaded system. If you would like your PM's, please contact us and they will be restored.
YEAH FINALLY, A PM system again!
WOOT!
Bout damn time!
Yes!
Help wanted and forums are next in line... plus fixing about 400 site bugs ;)
Thumbs up! The new system is really cool! Will our old conversations get stored somewhere, or will they be deleted when the forums are updated? So many precious memories there...don't let them dieeeeeee. ;) gj!
when the forums are updated no data will be lost. All old PM data is lost since the old system wasn't threaded meaning it would look a little silly to copy them over. If you want particular PM's restored however, send me an email and I will copy them from v3 to v4 so they are not lost
INtense, go into the forums. Click your PM section. There are all the old PM's. Or at least mine are there. And not to mention, I sent you one. Did you enable the messages on the forum again too?
Because they are both working now, but seperate in a way. Like two inboxes.
They are the v3 pm system, its totally separate and only v3 members can access that site. That stuff will be totally retired in a few months
TIME TO FLAME AND GET WARNINGS AGAIN >: )
Yay!
*can't wait for Help Wanted to return...*
I Agree!!
Indeed! My project could really do with that at the moment! Animators Required etc! lol. :D
Great to see the PM system back tho! And just love the improvements!! :)
This sounds MAGIC, next year i'll be able to wish a Happy Holidays to all my friends, all at the same time.....;)
Still awaiting v4 forums dammit!!
Alright, who wants to PM me just because!?
woot, very awesome!
moddb just keeps improving :)
I really think the forums should have been a priority over this but it's still nice. :D
Agreed. Most projects have forums of their own, and even on top of that method of communication, there's email and MSN. PMs should have been second priority imho.
PM's were needed over forums so that modDB Staff could better communicate with mod teams, and visa versa.
We have had mods and articles sitting in our "waiting" queue for weeks because people have not responded to their emails. Having an in-house PM system allows us to communicate with mod teams without having to rely on 3rd party email systems, problems, spam filters etc.
Disagreed. I think PMs are more important. Besides, "private message conversations are threaded, which means they are essentially private little forum threads". ;)
I don't know why I bother with all these brilliant suggestions, but...
I think modwatchers should be incorporated as a group, or otherwise should be given the functionality of being contacted en masse.
This would save me the hassle of hunting down individuals to contact and keeping a list that would need to be updated every so often.
