The main features from Polaris Sector are these:
- An epic and dangerous playground: randomly generate a galaxy able to host up to 900 stars.
- Full customization: external threats, pirates, number of races… you can set up the world that fits your own tastes!
- Full control over ship design: want to make a corvette into a drone carrier? Go ahead. Want to make a freighter into a scout? No problem. Your creativity is the only limit!
- Explore: send scout vessels to find new mines to exploit, new planets to colonize, and to establish contact with other empires.
- Innovative research system: technologies and equipment will get unlocked depending on your investments in fundamental and applied research.
- Diplomacy: Dialogue with other factions to gain their favor, trade goods, and make military agreements to fight common enemies.
- Command your troops: when a battle starts you can join the battlefield and maneuver your ships in a tactical mode. Alternatively use the auto-resolve mode when you have more urgent tasks to attend to in your empire.
- Unique espionage system: seed false intelligence to enemy spies and lure them into a trap!
But for me, I would remark these other features more relationated with modding:
- We can change the way of count the time. The game count more at months, you can change it easily change it to days.
- Replace the ground units, buildings, structures can be made at very few time.
- Everything use png image files and you can edit all them from the game.
- The code is text and you can edit even the compiled files.
- Videos and audio a ogg files and they can be replaced easily.
- Convert a model from EAW alo format or at 3Dmax to this game takes minutes of work.
- The creator and the publisher support the mods.
You can see here some of the things which I have been making because I could test the beta and to start to create a new Star Wars mod for this game 4 months ago.

How does the modding work, is it xml or lua files ?

Yo ya lo tengo desde hace dias y a la espera de tu gran mod, esperamos nuevas cosas y una fecha cercana xD
Por cierto una cuestion, vas a renombrar las estrellas y los nombres de los planetas para que sean nombres canon de Star Wars o solo se pueden los nombres por defecto.

Eso que preguntas es un poco lioso de hacer con semejante número, ademas son estrellas, yo no se como se llaman las estrellas de SW. Sin embargo el mod si hara otra cosa, dependiendo del bando, cada planeta que conquistes se ira llamando de una manera.
En cuanto a la salida del mod, este fin de semana o algunos dias más, saldra un parche de modding con la novedad de poder añadir heroes, asi que estoy esperando y aprovecho para añadir más unidades a algunos bandos y algunos cambios más para que sea más de SW.
Respecto a los heroes por lo que se, sera muy parecido al Rebellion, podras transportarlos en tus naves y tendran ventajas. O al menos asi creo que es, aún no he visto eso.
Tambien el parche traera mejoras para como instalar mods y algunas cosas más. Por lo que se, se podra instalar atraves de steam o slitherine, supongo que con la upgrade estos.
