Post news Report RSS Minecraft Snapshot 12w18a

This week we've started working on separating the server logic from the client. The purpose of this is both to make it easier for us to add features (since we don't have to implement stuff “twice”), and also to make it possible for you to invite people to play on your local computer without setting up a server.

WARNING! This update's enchanting is broken, and singleplayer has inherited all multiplayer bugs! Including movement lag!

Important! This week's snapshot is extra experimental!

This week we've started working on separating the server logic from the client. The purpose of this is both to make it easier for us to add features (since we don't have to implement stuff “twice”), and also to make it possible for you to invite people to play on your local computer without setting up a server. In other words, more like how it works on Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

The work has not been completed yet, though, but a snapshot's a snapshot. However, the game should still run fine, and we've also made some other tweaks:
More fixes to silk touch and block picking
Wooden tools work in furnaces
Villagers spawned from spawning eggs will get a random profession
Updated language files
Etc

Get the snapshot here:
Client: Assets.minecraft.net* (See below!)
Server: Assets.minecraft.net (or EXE)

* The client now comes with both the client-side and the server-side JAR files. The file called “minecraft.jar” should be in your “.minecraft/bin” folder as usual, and the “minecraft_server.jar” file should be in a folder called “.minecraft/server”.

If you havent downloaded Minecraft you can grab it here: www.minecraft.net/download

(buried)

it's a bad thing, because it means that now singleplayer worlds can be griefed by neighbors or just people on laptops nearby. The only GOOD implementation of local servers is to have that be a multiplayer menu option.

I don't want to get this, just because of the bugs, but I can't wait for this stuff to be added in 1.3! Sounds awesome!

What about multiplayer mod support? my idea was that when you join a server you download the host's mincraft.jar and puts it in a tempuary folder so you can play without problems or messing up your minecraft.jar.

Please excuse my spelling, im half asleep

This will mark the downfall of Minecraft if they continue with this merging of multiplayer and single player. You can't even play single player without a net connection[I tried you can't play] and if they continue I will leave the game.
Because what there doing is going to force people to stay online while they play single player which I shouldn't call it single player anymore it's more like solo multiplayer.

I have tried to play with no net active cause I removed my cable from my computer and wouldn't even let me create a new world unless I had a net access.
And as I stated this is not a good move for them cause it will create a ton of lag and problems for people who have low end computers and SMP servers will cause some lag to them, so this move will ultimately spell there downfall and cause a ton of people to stop playing the game.
Now if they don't implement SMP features into SSP then and only then will they redeem themselves.
Until then it's a no go.

What kind of snapshot is this, how pathetic. I'm almost as disappointed now as I was when I learned they were making Minecraft for Xbox.
