Xash3D implements the old Half-Life dll, which is really outdated. I'm pretty sure the mod developer prefers the new dll (the one that comes with the Staem version of HL).
Goldsource's skyboxes can only actually be 256x256 by default, I only wish we could use 512x512! You can't force filesizes either, using larger resolutions either crashes the game or causes the default sky (2desert) to be loaded.. can't remember which. I tried this years ago...

Yes, GoldSrc actually only supports 266x256 skies. The only way to force the resolution is recoding the whole engine, otherwise, well, you know what will happen.

the sky looks cool, but looks a little low in detail...
GoldSrc only supports 512x512 sky textures, so it's impossible to use hi-res ones.
But this looks very nice anyway.

Yup, but that will take time. Besides, not everyone can force the resolution without making the engine crash.

there's some code out their that supports high res skyboxes, as well as 3d skyboxes too.
