Judging by the eleventh Soviet mission (Red Revolution), Yuri was at that point far away from being as influential as he was in the opening of Yuri's Revenge. Presumably, many years passed between the games - only, we travel back in time in the very first mission, and thus we never see what happened to the world at large. But what if we could see that? Yuri's Revenge: Before Alcatraz intends to explore what happened between the conclusion of the Allied campaign of Red Alert 2, and the beginning of Yuri's Revenge.

"Ready for meltdown!"

When Moscow fell during operation Chrono Storm, the World Socialist Union was decapitated, and the war was brought to a swift conclusion. But not for Iraq. For Iraq, the World Socialist Union had been the sole and best chance at freedom from the British imperialists who had long since occupied the Middle-East. With the Third Great War concluded, the British and their European allies were free to focus on the Middle-East again. For half a century, the Middle-East had been in state of turmoil, starting with a series of revolts in the 1920s. These had been crushed by the British and the French - to be sure, Egypt had nominally won its independence in 1922, but Cairo soon came to serve as a British military basis, and the country thus remained British. Over the years, the uncoordinated pro-independence revolts turned into coordinated pro-Soviet revolts, which only caused the Europeans to double down on their repressive policies. Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, all these regions and more were brutally occupied for decades.

Only Iraq had managed to free itself from the European yoke, thanks to Soviet weaponry and other aid smuggled into Iraq through Iran. And also, thanks to a cabal of Iraqi researches, working in a deep underground complex hidden from the European overlords. Oil was slowly but surely becoming somewhat of an obsolete substance, especially in Soviet-aligned countries, pioneering tesla energy as a replacement. While eventually, the Allied Nations would settle on clean, compact, and efficient Power Plants, employing geothermal or hydroelectric energy, they experimented with a variety of other power sources as well, ranging from solar - branching out from prism technology - to nuclear. One such nuclear power plant was established in the deserts of Iraq, and it was this act that would give birth to the Desolator.

Of course, this Desolator programme could only succeed with the aid of the Soviet metal harnesses - suits, really - that their Tesla Troopers wore. The Iraqi people were strong and determined to claw their way to freedom - but there should be a people left to enjoy this freedom, to enjoy the beautiful country that had once been home to the oldest civilisations humanity had ever known. It seemed that this dream was coming true, on the brink of the Third Great War - but the dream was soon crushed, and Iraq slipped back in open warfare as the British and the French moved in again.

Soon, whispers arose of a new power, of 'Hurria'. Egypt freed itself, first secretly, then openly, throwing the British out of Cairo and out of the Suez. Ameer Kassad reigned there now. A self-proclaimed malik of the House of Saud, ruling the sprawling deserts of Nejd - the interior of the Arabia - had recently unified the eastern tribes of Arabia, and was no marching onto the Hejaz. Half-abandoned bases there were fortified and garrisoned anew, but with the help of prince Kassad, a two-pronged assault left all of Arabia in the hands of Alsaud. The newly established Kingdom of Saudi Arabia promptly began providing aid to Iran, which was caught between the Europeans, exploiting the state for its oil, the Americans, couping the state for its ideology, and the Soviets, threatening to directly annex the state in an effort to 'free' it from these western influences. Iraq, fortified to the brim with Allied Prism Towers and Soviet Tesla Coils, would run red before it was free - but it would be free, one day.

Iraq's civil war is still raging on, as a bloody war of attrition sees little progress except for an ever-increasing bodycount. Saudi Sandstorms now fly over Iraq's southern border, and the occasional Dustdevil probes the Allied and Soviet fortifications found throughout the country. Militia reveal themselves, the battlecry of 'Hurria!' on their lips, liberating Iraq inch by bloody inch. As this endless civil war goes on and on, all sides have gained access to the Desolator programme. The Europeans have discarded it as a crime against humanity - but what is a brutally oppressed people to do? - and Hurria has used its existence as a rallying cry to liberate the oppressed Iraqi people - forced into radiation poisoning and inevitable death - but the Hurria movement has none the less seen fit to scavenge the Desolator programme, and adapt it to their own use.

The legacy of the Desolator will be a long and cruel one, and all of nature will suffer for man's folly - but, of course, the Iraqi proletariat is blameless in employing whichever means it has at hand, to free itself from evil European imperialism. Alternatively, the poor and the oppressed are righteously fighting for their very survival against the tyranny of communism and imperialism both. Your choice.

Cannoneer
$1000, Barracks, Battle Lab
150 strength, plate armour
Speed 4, sight 5
'Sasha' radiation cannon (anti-infantry)
'Natasha' tesla cannon (anti-vehicle)
(long range, uses radiation-tipped shells against infantry and tesla-tipped shells against the rest, excellent against non-flying units, bad against buildings)
User Posted Image
"I am heavy weapons guy!" (voice based on Team Fortress 2's Heavy)

European scientists and generals still haven't figured out what exactly the Cannoneer does. Its cannon seems to either launch a blob of radiation or a blob of electricity, but that makes no sense according to the laws of physics as European scientists understand them. Of course, the Soviets have disregarded the laws of physics before, what with their superheavy Kirov zeppelins.

"Electricity is in the air!" (voice based on Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3's Tesla Trooper and Tesla Tank)

It is still uncertain if Yugoslavia's border is primarily meant to keep the Europeans out, or to keep the Yugoslavians in. Humming with thousands of Tesla Coils, continuously attended by crews of over a dozen Tesla Troopers at a time, in turn watched over by bands of Cannoneers, with Desolators waiting in the distance and Dread Drones softly buzzing by up high, ready to turn the entire area into an irradiated wasteland upon the slightest scent of betrayal. It is estimated that upwards of 10% of all Yugoslavians are employed at the border, a number that excludes those serving in the military. Were they to be included, the number goes up to 40%, by the best estimates of Austrian spies.

Of course, these estimates are little more than vague guessing; 72.3% of all spies that have tried to enter Yugoslavia, were electrocuted while passing the border. 19.8% of all spies managed to survive twelve hours within Yugoslavia (but the vast majority of these managed to survive two hours at most), while 7.8% managed to survive twenty-four hours. The remaining 0.2% includes both those that survived for a week, and those that actually survived, without being killed. However, because this also includes a spy that died as a result of falling down the stairs of his apartment - assumed to be a natural accident, and thus, not a kill - the actual number of spies that successfully exfiltrated from Yugoslavia is zero.

There are two reasons for this. One is that literally the entire border is fortified beyond belief - it would take an all-out war for Yugoslavia's border to be penetrated (if that would at all be possible, a regular debate in the highest ranks of the military). However, every border can be bypassed, in theory, and once beyond the border, infiltration becomes significantly easier. An amphibious landing, a small plane that would leave no radar signature, a subterranean insertion... Unfortunately, Yugoslavia has guarded herself against all these and more. Especially against aerial threats, correctly identifying these as being the most successful source of infiltration and intelligence gathering. Any aerial target, including Russian Spy Planes and approximately half of the native bird population - better safe than sorry - is instantly short-circuited, overloaded, and completely fried, by the Yugoslavian adaption of the Tesla Tank; the Surge.

The Surge is the second reason why none can enter Yugoslavia. A vehicle more comparable to the Rhino Heavy Tank than to the Flak Tank, in armour and speed, it is equipped with twin tesla coils based on the Tesla Tank's new design. No wonder, then, that Yugoslavia took a leading role in redesigning the Russian Tesla Tank. On first sight, the Surge is merely a Tesla Tank repurposed to attack aerial targets, but under the hood, the mechanism behind its weapon is quite different, and a testament to the brilliance of Yugoslavia's engineers. While the Tesla Tank is capable of frying ground targets from a long range, the Surge can actually conduct electricity through the air; instead of unleashing a blast of electricity that arcs over the ground until it connects with something, the Surge somehow charges the very air in a precisely calculated path, and anything caught in this path is sure to come crashing down.

Further, the Surge is uniquely attuned to the miniature tesla reactors that power the Armageddon Tank. Any Surge escorting these lumbering behemoths can overcharge these tesla reactors, allowing the Armageddon Tank to reach a much higher speed. Surging forward, indeed.

As such, it is, unfortunately for the Europeans, a safe bet that Yugoslavia is impenetrable - and who knows what terrifying plans Tito has been cooking up in Beograd?

300 strength, heavy armour
Speed 7, sight 4

"Maximum power!"

The Tesla Tank was a prototype that functioned 'acceptably' in the last war, which means that the leading engineers are even now enjoying a 'short' holiday in Siberia. Its light armour didn't result in a fast enough speed, and its twin tesla coils performed underwhelmingly against anything better armoured than a GI fresh from bootcamp. However, Soviet generals had often seen their slow-moving Apocalypse Tanks turned to rubble by faster Allied forces, before the might of the Apocalypse could even begin to be unleashed. Besides, with the Allies shutting down any War Factory they could find, it would take a long time before the World Socialist Union could construct any new Apocalypse Tanks.

A replacement was needed, then, and what vehicle better suited for this role than the Tesla Tank? The Allies could hardly shut down the entire energy grid Russia relied on, and Russian engineers had long since become adept at tweaking the production process of Tesla Reactors to be just a little more 'wasteful', so that the inevitable batches of 'failed' coils could be used for... Other purposes. The light armour of the Tesla Tank was an advantage here, needing not the heavy machinery of the War Factories or Industrial Plants that were being shut down (though, this 'light' armour is comparable to that of the Grizzly Battle Tank - which, by Soviet standards, classifies as 'light'). And because the newly designed tesla coils were based on (vastly miniaturised and redesigned, but even so) the Tesla Reactor's own coil, the new Tesla Tank could provide an almost continuous stream of electric energy, arcing over the ground until it hit a target.

The first prototypes were produced in Hungary, where Allied interference was far less than in Russia. Yugoslavian engineers, the primary architects of the new Tesla Tank, had been flown over to Hungary to witness their creation 'in the flesh', so to say. Soon, most of eastern Europe had access to the improved Tesla Tank. In fact, Russia was one of the last Soviet countries to gain access, after two Romanian spies heroically sailed from Constanta to Anapa, avoiding the Allied patrols in the water along the way.

The ease of producing the Tesla Tank quickly made it a common sight amongst the Soviet militaries, despite strong protests from Austria and Poland. But as the Italian ambassador pointed out; reports indicate that the Tesla Tank is worse than useless against any properly designed building, being large and strong enough to let the electricity dissipate naturally, which makes the Tesla Tank a defensive unit in nature - and do we not want the Soviet armies to be precisely that? Or do we want thousands of Apocalypse Tanks at our borders, waiting for their premier to order the obliteration of Europe?
