PASSCHENDAELE
The heavy rain in the summer and autumn of 1917 combined with the already wet and muddy ground around Passchendaele proved to be a death trap for anyone fighting there. The mud swallowed men, animals and even machines alike.
After the fighting had calmed in October, allied leaders inspected the battlefield. British Chief of Staff Launcelot Kiggel uttered;
"My goodness, did we really send our men to fight in this?"
