Looks great but is its barrel supposed to be so wide?

Yes, most of it is a barrel shroud to keep the gun cool during long periods of sustained firing.

or rather to different it from someone else's patent of a light machine gun, with a more or less useless cooler shroud.

You should add a small plug for added realism. During substained fire or if the gun froze up the operators would take turns urinating into the shroud in order too cool, or possibly heat up the gun.

"LOCK AND LOAD HERE COMES THE HUN JUST HOLD ON FOR 12 MORE SECONDS LADS!"
Sergent Bethans last words in the battle of Verdun before the British artilry blew away there own trench. the Germans soon took the trench and saved as many of the poor British soldiers who where wounded from there own guns. that's the point where these Germans knew that this war was a wreck. they did save 9 of 10 of the wounded Brits god bless them the Germans and the British soldiers.

(true story bro)
