Hello and welcome to the home of War of the Silmarils on ModDB! The mod had indeed been inactive for a long time, but, being a leading member of the original team, since last year I took it upon myself to revive and finish it, retrieving all the content made by my old team so far and starting the modfolder from scratch, and finishing the map, which during the last year I have vastly improved and perfected. I shall be posting news and previews on this page as development continues, so stay tuned!
War of the Silmarils is a submod of Third Age: Total War for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms, based in the TATW submods section over at twcenter, and it aims to bring the heroic wars of Beleriand into the Total War engine. It will feature more than a dozen new factions with unique and original unit rosters while taking care to follow the lore of J.R.R.Tolkien as closely as possible, and a new campaign map covering all the lands west of the Blue Mountains in the First Age of Middle-earth.
War of the Silmarils takes place at a time many thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings, a time when Men had just awakened and mighty Elven kingdoms dominated the west of Middle-earth. A time when the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, commanded Balrogs, dragons, werewolves and innumerable hosts of Orcs from his stronghold of Angband in the North. The campaign starts at the year 455 of the First Age, just before the Dagor Bragollach, when all the Elven princes are still alive and strong. Set amidst a grand tale of theft, exile, blood-curdling oaths and terrible wars, as recounted in Tolkien's Silmarillion, War of the Silmarils lets you take command of one of the many factions vying for power in Beleriand, and fight for survival or destruction in a time of total war!

Thank you! The old images and previews were outdated and that material won't be used, so they have been deleted, but new previews of the map and the factions will follow very soon, and hopefully a release within this year.

In the picture for the mod, who is the one sitting on the throne, and who is the spirit thing in front of him? Forgive my ignorance.
The one on the throne is Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, and the spirit thing is Lúthien.

Finally a mod for the First Age with the Medieval 2 Total War engine!!! I hope in the future you do a mod fo the Fourth Age!!! :)
So how close are you guys to finishing and releasing? Just can't wait for this beautiful lore-driven mod and would love to know when i can crush Morgoth ;)

Seriously, kudos to you for picking this up. Had I been a software engineer, I would have been only too happy to lend a hand and see this come to fruition. Alas, I am not. It is about time we got a chance to alter the story of the First Age and right some of those tragic wrongs. Uber excited!
Having said that, I would be delighted to offer my services for lore research to make this mod as awesome and as closely adhering to Tolkien as possible. I am sure you are doing just fine by yourself in that department, but I am more than happy to lend a hand. All you have to do is ask.
Also, was wondering if there were any updates since June. Are we still shooting for a December release?
Will Morgoth himself me a general or commander? I do remember in the Silmarillion him ounce coming out to face one of Feanor's sons. Similarly will the sons of Feanor be included as generals or military units?
Yes, in the Silmarillion, Morgoth went one on one with Fingolfin. But Fingolfin was Feanor's half-brother, not his son. Also, perhaps Morgoth will make an appearance in this mod in a fashion similar to Sauron in the Third Age mod.
