The first full version (1.1 Final, Release 1) of the unofficial patch was a huge success - it reached over 10000 downloads in only 4 months, an absolute record for AOE1!
UPatch HD 1.1 Release 2: The new version is focused primarily on the new modding system, but it also brings new Scenario Editor options and some important bug fixes and improvements. If you already have Release 1 (1.1 Final), just install over it and select your resolution again from Settings.
The new modding system in UPatch HD allows you to install and use mods properly without affecting the original game, just like in modern games. With new possibilities like the ability to add entirely new civilizations, which was not possible in the original game! The Mod Manager can also show basic information about the selected mod, including a link to a web page. All the information about using/creating mods is posted in the official site.
New options for the Scenario Editor are available in 1.1-R2. These options remove some default Scenario Editor restrictions and allow more control over unit placement (previously this required some complicated modifications). You can turn off terrain restriction, enable free placement and overlapping of units. Additionally you can also show all units normally hidden in the Units tab of the Scenario Editor or un-hide hidden/Beta terrains (use these options with caution). Check the full description of all options in the site.
Here is a very simple example of what can be done with the new options (the flooded area was made from many Grass Clump units placed together):
In addition, the new version includes some important bug fixes and solves some problems of the original game, like the very common bug with missing game fonts. Many other small tweaks and optimizations were made in different areas of the patch, so update as soon as possible (the old version is no longer supported). The Launcher now has an option to check for update (in About).

This is awesome. I should look into playing age of empires 1 with dad this weekend :P
I'll ask, because I have to. Do you see any chance of expanding the map size in any way?
No, not really possible without source code.
Too bad. Great work regardless.
