I've got the recent version of XWA from GOG and TIE 94 and 98 (installing TIE 95/SE too now in case thats the issue?) but it was installing and I checked and it had a bunch of errors and didn't work - trying again now, will screen shot if it happens again

screen shottie error

it's like... almost installed then :(

uninstalled XWA, reintsalled, rebooted and tested XWA worked, rebooted, made sure everything like GOG Galaxy was off - same install fail

Try again without the 2 boxes checked for shortcut and other option. I had same issue.

Hello. We've found this issue usually happens if you are not installing the XWAU Update 4 patch before TFTC, or that patch is corrupted. Remember the install progression must go like this and redownload Update 4 patch if its still erroring.

Clean XWA install ---> XWAU Mega Patch ---> XWAU Update 4 Patch ---> TFTC

We've also found that this can happen if you have the game installed via Program Files directory. We recommend you move the game to a different location due to possible permission issues within this folder. XWA has no DRM so you can make a copy of the game directory anywhere you like.

So maybe a variation to what I've read so far:

I've got XWA installed (basically E:/Games/XWA, so in a custom location). XWAU2020 seemed to install ok. XWAU2020update_v4.0 seemed to install ok.

When I try to install TFTC, it hits the setup screen, gets to "initializing setup step 3", makes it to ~2GB, then closes with no error message. Are there logs somewhere that I can try to figure out what's killing it before it even starts installing (I've been checking "Log selected components" but I haven't found what that does yet)? The game seems to run just fine (Palpatine Converter does not recognize TFCM of course). It SEEMS like the XWAU 4.0 installed ok because Babu lets me change the game's language (which seems new).

So...not sure where to go from here....

Hi, this error usually occurs if you have insufficient disk space on your C Drive as the mod will be extracting files to your temp folder. If you are NOT installing the mod to your C drive, then you still need up to 20GB of free space still to install. This is a bug in the installer where it doesn't actually generate an error message and simply closes down without any verbose warning or crash report. Something we hope to fix in the future so people know why it failed.

Bah, all I had to do was ask...

Yup that was it. I found that bit of instruction last night and only got to try it this morning. Install went smoothly and the game at least boots up and gets to the main hub just fine.

Thanks very much for your help! Looking forward to playing this!!

Hello,

I'm having a similar issue. I've followed the above requirements, but i have the same error type, but in a vvery different area. I have installed the mods in the order above; it has over 20gb of free space on all drives etc. However when i went to look in the folder, i couldn't actually see the file it was trying to mod.

Any suggestions?

error

Hi Rogue2205, this looks like you are running the CD version of X-Wing Alliance. There is an extra step required here in that you have to copy the contents of the Wave folder on both Disk 1 and Disk 2 to your XWA install before proceeding to install the mod. This should fix the error you are receiving.

Thank you very much - that worked perfectly

Thank you AngelTFTC I was also having the same issue with the CD version and what you suggested worked! Along with changing the read/write permissions to the folder. Need to be persistent. Looking forward to re-playing it with updated graphics.

Hi, I just bought x-wing alliance on steam made a copy to a different file, got the mod and update installed, but when I downloaded and unzipped this mod I get the following error from my 7-zip: Diagnostic messages

0 C:\Users\Johnathan\Downloads\TFTC_1.0.zip

1 CRC failed in "TFTC_1.0.nsisbin". File is broken.

any idea one else get this error?

Jul 18 2021 Anchor

Hi, sounds like your download is corrupted, I would suggest redownloading. We have 2 other mirrors available in the file description if you're having issues with one.

Jul 19 2021 Anchor

Ok found this thread, i may have missed installing the 4th patch so doing it all over again :(

Jul 22 2021 Anchor

Having a similar issue as the others. It says another process is using the file, but that's not possible. I've rebooted my system completely between each file install, so nothing should be using it. error

Jul 23 2021 Anchor

Make sure any anti-virus is disabled and another thing to try is to run the installer as an Administrator via the right click menu in Windows. If the issue persists, join our Discord server and post in our helpdesk channel and we will try to help you resolve the issue.

Jul 26 2021 Anchor

That seems to have worked. Thanks!

Had this issue. Installing the mega mod and then the patch worked for me. Thanks

Hi there, I have a similar issue, when trying to install XWAU2020. The error-message is in the screenshot. XWAU2020 Error

I tried it on linux with wine 3, wine 6, in virtualbox with windowsXP-SP2 and on real hardware with XP-SP2. The XWAU2020-Program always shows a little splash-screen, followed by the error-message, posted above.

I'm using the CD-version of XWA and copied over all Wave- and Movie-files to the install-directory.

The destination-directory is on an external hdd. I also changed the temp-folder-location to that drive.

I also tried compatibility-mode for win95 and win98, I changed windows-versions in wine to 95, 98, XP, Win7 and at last Win8.

In addition, I used the program xwahacker-3.2 to manipulate the original XWA to be able to run in wine, without success in wine, but with success on real hardware.

On real hardware, original XWA is able to start, on wine and virtualbox original XWA is crashing on start.

I installed .NET 4 with a lot of hotfixes

I installed .NET 3.5 and .NET 3.5-SP1

I reinstalled directX9 from June 2010 several times

I installed vc-redist 2005 and 2008

...now I'm out of ideas. Somebody please help.

Edit:

Got a bit closer with tracking down the error: I bought the GOG-version of the game, which installed fine in WindowsXP in virtualbox. The GOG-version automatically installs vcredist_2013, by the way. Somebody could have told me that I did miss this one, in my last post.

However afterwards, XWA did start in Virtualbox! I then tried installing XWAU_2020 which failed to load again. I then used 7zip to open that file. Inside was a skript-file and a folder with updated XWA-files. So I copied the content of the folder into my XWA-Install-Directory, with overwriting already existing files.

Afterwards, I manually did all the steps the skript usually would do: Renaming some files from upper-case to normal-style, deleting some model-files and replacing some strings in a text file.

I then tried to start this (hopefully) manually upgraded XWA and get the error "MF.dll is missing".

Afterwards, I tried installing the TFTC which also crashed immediately.

I then opened the XWA-folder in linux with wine 6 (it's configured as "Windows 7"). This time the exe started and gave me the message that .NET 4.5 was neccesary!

.Net 4.5 is VISTA-ONLY!

It seems the newest XWA-Upgrade-pack is breaking XP-compatibilty! This wasn't mentioned anywhere! I bet mf.dll is Vista-only as well!

If a dev was reading this: Please fix that problem!

XP is ten times smaller than vista and all it's brothers and sisters. So skipping XP-support is a problem for virtualisation. The original game was for Win95/98 btw., which were even smaller (maybe 300 MB).

I can understand changing prerequisites to XP, since Win95/98 were pretty limited, unstable OSes. However, with the second step, the harddisk-requirements got multiplied by 100 in total! (30 GB for vista instead of 300 MB for Win95/98). That's overkill! Please consider treating that as a bug!

I will now try installing .net 4.5 in wine. It seems the only solution left for me.

Hello Snoopy2021,

To address your points:

TFTC/XWAU should work fine using Lutris. I'm not a Linux user or expert, but we have a dev from the Lutris community who has been trying to make the mod as compatible as possible. The only thing that does not work are the cutscene videos, that has not been fixable.

Regarding the size requirements, XWAU and TFTC combined is a huge mod, though we are working on ways to add compression to the larger files, the mod will always be in the 20GB range for space required, that is the reality of the mod.

Regarding XP/Virtual environments, we do not have any active support for this nor do we plan to add it. The mod has been developed for modern operating systems, most of us are using Windows 10 when we do our work. We have no plans to make this compatible for extremely old OSs regardless of when the original game came out. The whole point of this is to make it work for a modern environment, not an old one.

#1: I found the lutris-skript on the web before, but didn't try it up to now. I have the feeling it was for vulkan-graphics-cards only. This is just the newest generation of graphics-cards. I don't have such an expensive card. Anyway, thank you for the tip.

#2: I wasn't talking about the mod's file-size. I was talking about the additional 30-50GB of the OS to actually run it in a virtualbox. Together with the mod, it's about 70 GB HDD-space in total, which I simply don't have left on my computer.

#3:

Oh, but you did:

X-Wing Alliance is fully compatible with Windows XP, including Service Pack 2

This is from the XWAU-forums. I didn't realize the thread is dated from 2004, though. Guess I I've learned something now. Thank you.

The whole point of this is to make it work for a modern environment, not an old one.

That's a pity. Windows 10 is still not standard for PCs and soon will be outdated again. I hope you don't upgrade specs further. There is obviously no need for a game from 1995.

Hi Snoopy2021

To clarify the XP compatibility statement, that is not us, that is XWAU. TFTC is built upon this project yes and reliant on it to function, but we are not the developers of XWAU. If you want to talk about XP compatibility, please address it to the XWAU team on their forums.

As far as I know, from what few people have tried, the mod works just fine on Windows 11 and those running Windows 7 and 8 have also reported it generally works fine too. There are always exceptions, but with some 30,000 people having downloaded and played TFTC so far, OS compatibility (Linux or Mac not withstanding), has not been a real issue.

Currently, the game doesn't particularly care too much about how good your graphics card is, as its mostly a CPU heavy game. Being so old it runs most of it 3D instructions through software not hardware. There are efforts underway to change this, but CPU speed is the main bottleneck in performance currently, not GPU.

I tried signing up on the XWAU-forums, but it wasn't possible. Their website reads that admins sometimes lock registrations when too many people try to register.

However, I don't need to be a forecaster to tell you that they won't backport their Software after several years of development based on .Net 4.5 and above. So they made their compatibility-decision several years ago. I don't think this was a reason to stop criticizing this. We do have compatibility-issues today because once again some devs couldn't withstand the pretty new features microsoft was offering in it's .net-updates. Most opensource-libraries are not bound to newer windows-versions. If commercial stuff has to be used, please set a limit!

Regarding to my concrete problem: This gives me hope, thank you. I might try it with Win7 in a virtualbox some day, after freeing up some disk-space. I still wonder why wine is such a problem, though. The lutris-skript is using vulkan-libraries...but with software-rendering this shouldn't be necessary. Maybe I'll try a new run with a fresh wine-prefix.

For the devs, enhanced linux-support was actually possible (and should be of interest), since linux has the mono-libraries as a replacement for .net: Some windows-only programs can run completely without wine, just with mono in linux.Don't know technical details about this magic. Maybe for XWA/TFTC a combination of wine/mono was possible.

Thank you anyway for answers, tips and clarifying my problems.

Hi there! When trying to install 1.3 full install off of a fresh XWAU install, I am getting the issue where the installer exits at step 24 of the setup initialization process. I saw the feedback about the hard drive space being the issue. I am on my C: with over 300GB of free space. Any advice or suggestions? I appreciate any help you can provide.
