It's the Vietnam jungle not a forest! You will play through a section like this but it wont look the same.. you'll have to wait and see as to what I mean.

He doesn't really fit in here I know, but it's just a test for the style, it makes no sense :P

Looks good, maybe make the characters a tad more clearer though...easier to see, you know?

Don't they look clear enough already? Any clearer and I might as well just use engine screenshots with no filters!

If you look at the Max Payne graphic novel, you can see that things aren't drawn very clear;

Max Payne theft? Just because I'm using an idea that was incorperated into Max Payne doesn't make it theft, if I were to actually use segments of the Max Payne artwork then that would be a different story.

Please think before you type :/

I don't know whether to be offended at you saying it's a 'rip-off' or pleased that you think it's 'awesome' :V

Honestly I wouldn't do it... just doesn't fit with your game.

Good job you have done over there but... trust me: your game doesn't needs this. A narrative speech with some tricky scenes or something is what you need... nor a comic style...

You should use a book in where the player will write his progress... or read what happened or something.

Well I wanted to do something a bit different, I thought that a graphic novel format would fit into the game fine since there's comics for Silent Hill, Hellraiser and lots of other franchises.

Yeah sure so Max Payne has done it and obviously the main point of inspiration is from that game but is that a bad thing? I could make cutscenes instead but how much extra wor k would that be? Having to make new animations, seperate files for dialogue inserted into the sentences.txt Not to mention setting up the camera angles correctly. There will be cutscenes in the game too but I wanted to mix that with a different style. The graphic novel saves time because I can just make backgrounds and use HLMV to pose the characters with cutom bone controllers for the face and limbs to get the right effect. Sure, it will require some new animations but those are more poses than actual movement.

This is my own mod, I am doing this for fun and for fans of Silent Hill and survival horror games, I owe no allegience to anybody so if people don't agree with me using a graphic novel format then I'm sorry but you'll either have to make do or just don't play the mod!

In terms of a book with Jack's progress in it, that will work for the 'objectives' Call Of Cthulhu style, so thanks for that!

I don't mean to be bitter but I've had a fair few negative comments recently and it's beginning to annoy me!

i'm sorry but i have to agree with sysop. however, the way i see it, its not the comic scenes that doesn't fit, but the narrator. its unique, though, first time it'll be done on the half life engine. but if you want to create a sense of isolation, having a narrator is certainly not going to help. so i'm suggesting that you do not use a narrator, but instead use sound effects, music(slow piano music recommended), and maybe voice overs.

As an update to this, I'm going to work on changing the style so it doesn't look so much like Max Payne and more along the lines of Sam and Twitch and other dark noir comics.

Actually I see what you all mean about the narrator now.. this is Jack remembering back to his days in Vietnam, the rest of the game is real time so there's no narration except for his present thoughts about situations.

Description

A test for one of the graphic novel sequences that takes place in the game. Made by creating a scene in engine with photo sources, then adding foliage models. Afterwards I painted on extra details and blended the plants in more with the ground, before posing models in HLMV and adding them into the scene. Then I applied several different filters in order to get something close to the Max Payne art style.

The grunts here are not final, they'll be replaced with all new character models of NAM soldiers carrying the correct issue M16 for the period.
