You play as a citizen who wakes in the canals behind his apartment. You don't remember how you got there, but the empty bottles around you give you a good idea of what happened. You aren't sure how to get back home, but sitting in the mud won't help. The canals of City 17 are known to be infested with headcrabs, and headcrabs mean zombies. You know that the Underground Railroad is nearby, and probably willing to help get you back to your home safely. Unfortunately for you, City 17 is about to have a visitor who is going to make your trip through the Canals just that much more difficult than they were already going to be. You are about to be fighting through a lot more than just a few zombies.
This is the new first map of 'The Canals.' As you can see, the environments have much more attention to detail than before, and significantly better lighting.
Random question- many of the maps you've shown are underground, and this map seems to be during dusk. Will all of The Canals take place in darker environments/times of day, or will there be maps cast in full sunlight?
So this is the new first map of the game. The plan is that the darker levels, such as the two or three sewer levels that follow this, take place during the night, and the game really picks up to an action-based game during the late morning when the player leaves the sewers. This is partially to match the time that Gordon Freeman begins his run through the canals as well.
The story wouldn't make too much sense if it didn't line up with that of Half-Life 2. The combine wouldn't go crazy and flood the canals with Metro Police and manhacks because one guy just so happened to wander in.
