You see problem is with hl2 is that is a texture - if you move around you going to see it rotating and that just fails otherwise the effect pretty darn epic!
how else should that work?
hl2 has already nice looking volumetric particle effects.
unfortunately there isn't actually one game which uses voxels for such effects

thanks for the nice comments and thats really a problem but i think with some coding i can make it reallistic
Coding does not change an animated texture, animation does.
ill code the following:
when someone makes an explosion it wont rotate to the eyes of a viewer
Won't it look 2D then? Like a thin explosion?
What you need is particle effects.
i will make it with particles so it will look more reallistic dont worry
