What is the difference between PLA soldiers and officers on uniform from 1965 to 1986 ？Ranks？ No,the ranks were abolished in May 1965. Well, the only difference is the number of pockets on uniform. Soldiers get 2 pockets while officers get 4. This design makes it difficult for soldiers from different troops to identity who is their commander(imagine a Lieutenant's uniform just the same as a Colonel,and with no ranks at all). However, it is easy to distinguish officers from soldiers during a battle, because PLA officers of that time were usually equipped with pistols, binocles and command flags which soldiers were not.
