Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

Skillpoint rewards for fighting/evading enemies seem kind of redundant and unbalanced considering the system already in place. It just seems that the original designers balanced the game as to reward progression and exploration over fighting or evading your enemies, giving you the ability to apporach confrontation in any way you choose, as the rewards are the same regardless. This seems to make individual rewards for sneaking or fighting relatively unecessary.

What's more, the rewards for actively engaging your enemies seems to be far more substantial than if you sneak past, creating quite a strong impetus to eschew stealth in favour of direct confrontation. I once made a pistol specialist and by the time I was finished in Hell's Kitchen for the first time I'd mastered Pistol thanks to the 10-20 skill points I'd get from all the headshot kills. It really adds up.

Everything else in your mod is a great improvement over Deus Ex, I just feel that this specific feature should possibly be made at least optional, depending on how easily implemented such an option would be.

Well you can add something like "bnewskillsytem false" into the, and that disables the skills for kills.... doesn't disable stealth points for some reason though.

Shifter really seems to be targeted more for the Deus ex Veteran completionist.... I mean, it's not like someone new to the game is going to completely ignore alternate routes because they're "too busy" plowing through enemies and getting skill points, And veterans will likely still go down those alternate "secret" routes which they already know so well just for the added skill points of the exploration bonus points. I don't see how adding more options is directly hurting the old options... it's still not like you can max everything out easily.

Well, with stealth I get your point, but considering that weapon skills are some of the more expensive skills.. it makes sense that the "ghost" JC wouldn't need those extra points to up them.
