This looks awesome!
I like the style!
In contrast to bloodmage, I think it's a bit too rough.
The white's are too bleached and the bump map/parallax mapping is too deep, especially on that rug and benches, making everything black in a not-to-pleasant-to-look-at way.
I guess it's a more personal feel :)
But I agree with some point you brought up..
Maybe they wanted it to be a black unpleasant atmosphere....?
Well I wanted the unpleasant atmosphere in the area, as a screenshot map it isn't the best. I'm playing around with things at the moment to create a unique style towards this map.

I like it. The gothic style would fit this game.
