RELENTLESS NIGHT V3.01 NOW RELEASED AND IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEWEST VIGILANT FLAMES UPDATE.

You can check in for more frequent updates at the Relentless Night discord group.

Note:
The mod scenario can be played in all sandbox difficulties and can be set up in its own sandbox page. The mod does not prevent playing survival mode or other vanilla modes. Relentless night saves are kept completely separate from other save data and cannot be played by regular sandbox mode and vice versa.

So what is the Relentless Night mod?

Relentless Night is a gameplay mod for The Long Dark that introduces a new sandbox scenario where the spin of the Earth is slowing down. Slowly but surely, days and nights are getting longer over time, leading to a world with continuously changing temperatures, weather patterns, wildlife populations, and more.

As the world slows, each longer-dark brings even colder temperatures to the Canadian North, huge temperature distributions in the atmosphere start to give way to stronger winds and blizzards, even adapted wildlife slowly start to disappear as they succumb to the worsening conditions of the cold nights.

The player, realizing what is happening, must take advantage of the longer days and the warmer temperatures to prepare for the next even longer and colder dark. All of this eventually leads to the final challenge where all your preparation will really determine how long you survive - The planet finally slows down enough to become tidally locked with the sun, with the survivor now left in the perpetual darkness of the new “dark side of Earth”, and its ever-worsening and frigid conditions.

Relentless Night will add a progress difficulty into survival mode that at first doesn't seem any different than regular sandbox mode, but the effects will slowly add up and bring about conditions that make gameplay harder. All this eventually leading to a world that's incredibly harsh and difficult to survive in, even for veterans and expert survivalists of the game.

COMPLETE MODIFICATIONS LIST (v3.01):

  • (new 3.01) Updated all mod features to work with new Vigilant Flame update.
  • (new 3.01) Coals can now be added to a fire without a waiting period (late-game balancing).
  • (new 3.01) More fuel can be added to a fire even if the fire has reached its maximum duration, provided that the fuel can still increase the fire's current temperature. Although the duration of fire will not increase further, the heat bonus will still be applied. (late-game balancing)
  • (new 3.01) The immediate area where an outdoor fire burned will also retain some heat a while longer after the fire's out, although of course the temperature bonus will drop and disappear much quicker compared to the heat from a fire inside an insulated building.
  • (new 3.01) Fixed mod bug where failing to start a fire indoors could reset the residual heat bonus remaining inside back to zero in RN's heat retention feature.
  • (new 3.01) Fixed mod bug where blizzard temperature drop didn't change temperature during blizzards in certain Relentless Night runs.
  • (new 3.01) Fixed mod bug where the temperature of outdoors caves would sometimes get calculated incorrectly and were warmer than intended.
  • (new 3.01) Fixed mod bug where custom mode option "Day Length Multiplier" would cause timing issues in RN runs if it was set above 1x. All values of this option can now be chosen for RN runs as well.
  • (new 3.01) Should you need to correct something in the RN settings later into your game, you can now change specific setting values through new console commands. Loading the save you want to change and entering "rn_help" into the console will provide information on all RN commands needed to change each setting.
  • All mod gameplay features can now be customized or turned off individually through the custom game setup menu.
  • Indoor environments will retain heat from fires much longer after the fire has burnt out. The hotter the fire, the longer it will keep the place warm. In enclosed buildings, fires will heat the whole house/space and better insulated environments will keep warm for longer.
  • Temperature will now affect wildlife populations. Roaming wildlife will be less abundant and harder to find in extreme cold temperatures, but also more abundant in relatively warm temperatures.
  • You can now adjust how long fuels will burn in a fire or how long lantern fuel will last while in use. All can be adjusted to provide up to 3 times their regular burn times.
  • Fixed bug in vanilla game where loot inside of containers in custom games would generate incorrectly, causing things [like this](). The correct amount of loot will now generate for the associated difficulty chosen in custom mode.
  • Fixed bug in vanilla game that prevented custom mode option "Wake Up When Freezing" from working. This feature is now functional and enabled in all Relentless Night games.
  • Days and nights get increasingly longer eventually ending in the tidal locking of the Earth and survival in perpetual darkness.
  • Temperatures become increasingly warmer/colder with duration of days/nights.
  • Indoor temperatures now have a slight correlation with outdoor temperature.
  • Blizzards and stronger winds become more frequent as days/nights become longer and weather becomes more extreme.
  • Roaming wildlife become increasingly scarce as outdoor conditions become more extreme and harsh.
  • Cabin fever affliction is disabled due to the eventuality of long nights and extreme outdoor temperatures.
  • Indoor environments can become slightly lit during nights depending on weather and available moonlight outdoors. During the brightest phases of the moon, crafting/breaking of items indoors can become available again.
  • Surveying is now possible at night, provided the weather is clear and enough light is present.
  • For every additional 1C below a feels-like temperature of -40C, the rate at which the player suffers freezing damage is increased. This effect can accumulate up to a maximum of 5x the original rate at a -100C feels-like temperature and below, do bring a jacket.
  • Note: Journal statistics and days survived are still tracked in regular 24-hour days, as if the player is still keeping track with a watch.

Hey, avid user of RL here. Can't imagine my game without it.

I had a small question concerning compatibility. I recently tried out a few new mods that zeobviouslyfakeacc had created. They ended up breaking my game and I lost my save. The reason seems to be incompatibilities between those new mods and yours. He mentioned RL still uses an older version of ModSettings, which is likely why this happened.

Do you think this may have caused this? And if so, is there a way to fix the problem?

Yea RN uses another menu mod (ModSettings.dll) to create its customization menu, like you said a new version of ModSettings was released recently with these new mods you mentioned. Because ModSettings isn't backwards compatible, if you installed the new ModSettings file with these new mods, it will likely cause issues with RN, which still uses the old ModSettings.

I will have to update the RN mod to use the new ModSettings file when I have some time. Though until then, if you want to play with RN, you will have to use the old Modsettings.dll provided with the RN files. Unfortunately that also means you wont be able to play these newer mods along with RN, until I update RN to use the new ModSettings file as well.

Your RN saves should still be there, you likely just can't see them because the new ModSettings file crashed the RN mod. Once/If you get RN working again, you should be able to play them again.

Let me know if you have further troubles!

Hi, wondering if these elements are already in, or might be added to your mod:

1) Indoors as cold as outdoors (without windchill) + makes residual heat from indoor fires last longer / linger.

2) Wolves afraid of you more often (like around 90% of the time, (still room for variation in terms of injury and meat etc).

This would bring the game much closer to the thing of beauty it is achingly close to being (imo).

Any chance of isolating these and providing as it's own mod?

My thanks for this versatile and balanced mod which provides the perfect final polishing for my gameplay!

Just wanted to inform that after updating the mod and loading my old 200day-run save... wildlife is not recognizing me at all. I can walk through deers and wolves without them noticing me. First I thought I have became better stalker :D Easy to make pointblank shots though.

Phenomenon experienced in Mystery Lake and Mountain Town. Wildlife is not set to passive but wolf fear is high. Do u have any thoughts on this? Would love to continue my old run of course...

My bad. Had probably unintentionally triggered ghost- mode on in umod. At least turning it on and off made the deer run again :D

Sry.

can you also make a simple mod, that changes the difficulty settings in such a way, that wild animals do not become more aggressive on higher difficulties?

I'm dedicating my modding time to maintain and improve relentless night at the moment, so I probably can't personally. Though there is a modding server you can check out to see if such a mod exists, the other TLD modders are also there and you can find resources to get into modding yourself too if you wish.

Good luck!
