Report RSS Who are the Western Allies?

A brief overview of the Allies, including a peek at the current Unit Lineup.

Posted by on

Introduction

Time has not been kind to the Western Allies. With the defeat of Yuri, both the Allies and Soviets went their separate ways, the two keeping a wary eye on each other, wondering who would be the first to fire the shots of the Third Great War.

It persisted this way for seven years until the second great Wall Street Crash of 1982. While exorbitant spending during the war had put the Allied treasury at risk, the economic crash on Wall Street left them virtually bankrupt. While the cause is still unknown even today, the knock on effects were felt - the fledgling London Stock Exchange was hit next, virtually bankrupting the United Kingdom. Other mysterious collapses soon started happening, forcing people out of their homes and onto the streets. Many citizens were unable to get jobs.

At first, people protested peacefully as Allied attempts to resolve the matter - such as using the reserve treasury - failed to produce results. When the peaceful protests got nowhere, the governments of the Allies were soon beset with rioting and terrorist acts, such as the infamous Parliament Bombing of '93 and the Wall Street Rampage of '95.

The Allied Government in response have had to declare martial law, something that has persisted to this day. As a result, Allied Society has become "Harsh, but fair."

Client States

The Client States of the Western Allies haven't changed signifigantly - virtually all of Western Europe and a handful of Eastern European nations (such as Poland and Croatia) have joined the European Union, while the United States and Canada still provide much financial and logistics support.

In the East, Japan has chosen to join the Allies, given China's newfound sense of superiority. The strategic positioning of Japan has given the Allies much control over the Pacific Ocean, though patrols rarely happen as the same water is bordered by the Red Star Protectorate.
Other significant new members of the Allies include Israil and South Africa, giving them footholds in Africa and the Middle East respectively.

In general however, all the Allied Client States operate closer to governed territories. The real heart of the Western Allies is the United Nations building in New York - a building that has become a very tight nerve centre of information and control, with the Allied military being headquartered at the Pentagon in Washington DC.

Society

What is less known about the Allies is that the economic collapse has made it ideal for Corporations to operate. With money in such necessity, the manufacturers and suppliers of anything from food and water to weapons and luxuries can dictate the prices of whatever they want.

A typical Allied city typically has a very clean and sterile looking Central Business District, which is often funded by several Corporations. As one radiates outwards however, the average Allied city shows signs of urban decay and neglect as fewer people can afford even suburban housing and are forced to set up Shanty Towns along the edges. While officially tolerated by the Allies, the Shanty Towns have become excellent hiding places for criminals and terrorists. As such, military patrols are not uncommon.

The average Allied Citizen is considered well off if he can afford to pay for himself and his essential bills and taxes. While the Allies are aware of this and are attempting to rectify this, they keep finding something unseen is hampering them. Many within the Allies have blamed the Red Star Protectorate for their failings, softening them up for another Great War - others however have argued that these kinds of tactics are simply not their style.

Military Structure

With the onset of the Collapse, the Western Allies have had to restructure their Armies and Police forces to form a multinational fighting force - the Guardians. The Guardians are both the keepers of the peace and the Allied military - which says a lot about the state of the Allied defence budget.
Regardless of crippled finances, the Allies try to ensure the Guardians have the latest in cutting edge technology. Extortionately expensive projects like McMillan Armament's Battle Fortress and underperforming weapons like General Motor's Grizzly Battle Tank have been all but cut, and what's left have been placed in reserve.

The main features of the Guardians are the distinctive Battlesuits. Twice the size of a regular infantryman, a Battlesuit combines the firepower and armament of a Tank with the manoeuvrability of an infantryman operator. Battlesuits in simulations have been shown to be faster and more advanced than any vehicles the Soviets were using during the Second Great War. In addition, recent innovations in miniaturising the technology have given birth to the Powered Exosuit, or "Power Armour" as it's more commonly known. The expensive nature of ExoSuits however has kept Unit Manufacture small and given only to Elite specialist units.

When heavier firepower is needed, the Allies have not completely abandoned Tanks. The Amplifier Tanks can provide heavy duty riot suppression should Guardian Field Command determine it necessary, and their Airforce, Navy and Robotics technologies are just as formidable as ever.

Allied Battle Strategy

The forces of the Western Allies are not the weakest, but most certainly not the strongest. They pack a fine mix of Specialists and Generalists, and can change tactics on the fly when needed. However, their versatility is also their undoing - Allied Units are incredibly synergy dependent to get the most out of their unique capabilities.

Current Units

Judicator is the code name given to an Allied Battlesuit Ace. Mounted in a prototype Battlesuit, Judicator brings heavy Anti Tank punch with a pair of Phaser Cannons. Judicator's presence also buffs nearby Battlesuits (exact buff not implemented yet, due to Attach.Effect being unsupported in current Ares build).

Model Used: A PNG made by Holy Master (exact name unknown). Special thanks toLin Kuei Ominae, ArvinCool, Cranium and Krow for their assistance in getting this to work properly ingame!

Guardians are the standard generic Allied Infantry. Guardians come with Sub-Machine Guns that have lackluster Anti Infantry punch, but have the fastest firing rates of all three basic infantrymen. As an added bonus, Guardians also carry Anti Tank and Anti Garrison Grenades, keeping them useful late into the game.

Model Used: A modified version of JustSomeGuy's Delta Force.

The Fennec has become the Allied Armored Car of choice, with it's excellent speed and vast infantry capacity. The military model for frontline combat is also cloaked, allowing it to slip demolition teams, spies or engineers into the enemy base for a quick capture. However, the Fennec has no weapons and minimal Armour, so if detected it won't last long under gunfire.

Model Used: carnage xploade's Fennec

The Enforcer Battlesuit is the primary Allied Battlesuit. It comes armed with a 30mm rifle loaded with Depleated Uranium rounds, capable of shattering light Red Star vehicles with three round bursts. It's surprising speed also allows it to run down stragglers and perform effective raids against the enemy early game. Just don't count on them standing up to a mob of RPG Legionaries - they still have poor Anti Infantry performance.

Model Used: A modified version of IceDragon 2001's "Small Battlemech".

The Defender Exosuit is a miniaturized Battlesuit packing a potent Phaser Gun. The Phaser will shread even the heaviest Red Star vehicles in a heartbeat, and performs reasonably well against infantry (though really, you should be investing Snipers and Commandos for that). They will still die easily to Anti Infantry weapons however, especially Tesla weaponry.

Model Used: MedalMonkey's Obelisk Trooper

The Amplifier Tank is one of the few units the Allies have that is not an Infantryman, Aircraft or Battlesuit. Originally, the Amplifier Tank was designed to knock over and incapacitate rioting hordes. On the battlefield, it's Sonic Cannon is amplified to bust large objects - in other words, it does more damage to larger targets, such as large vehicles and structures. Their Sonic weapon can harm your troops as easily as it harms the enemy however, and unsupported will be bought down by dedicated Anti Tank Infantry or Aircraft.

Model Used: Azari Apoc's Plasma Tank (will receive a slight recolor mod later).
