After a long, bloody war in the Sudan, the governments of the United States and Russia struck an uneasy cease-fire over the fate of Africa and its burgeoning industry. This peace would be short lived, for to the north a new conflict was brewing. Ukraine, a former satellite state of the Soviet Union, sought to gain back the power from which it once reveled in. As the snow fell in a heavy midwinter storm, Ukrainian troops moved towards the border of Belarus. Without warning, Ukrainian troops attacked with a speed and effectiveness not seen since the Blitzkrieg of WWII.

This weekend should be a good time for Dirk and a few of our German Testers as they are attending BFCon’06. The pictures on the BFCon’06 website looks like our European friends are having an exciting time. Hopefully one of the guys from our team took a digital camera so that we can post images of the event in our Interactive Development area when they return.

The news is always written in “third person” and is posted using our signature so that it represents us as a team. Within the news we try to make sure that the developers get the credit for their hard work. It’s very easy to post a screenshot, render, or video and discuss how hard that individual developer has worked but there are others behind the scenes that contribute to our success. Our “Team Operations” consists of the guys that do things behind the scenes that support the back end of our development process. One of these guys would be Grennie_Dirk. He came onboard as one of our Researchers and has expanded his role as one of the German forum moderators and translates all of the suggestions that are posted in German. Another helpful thing Dirk takes care of is translating our news updates into German, He then sends it to Battlefield:2 German community sites. The numerous hours he has spent providing research for the team has allowed the other developers to do their job – and do it accurately. Thanks Dirk!

This week we have two new Developers to announce. Both are experienced in game mod development and are new to the Battlefield engine. Macht_Tot is a former CoD developer & Squirrelly comes to us from the Insurgency team which is a Half-Life 2 modification. Both guys will be working in the graphics arena as Macht_Tot is already working on a weapon model and Squirrelly will be adding textures to static’s. Their work won’t be included in .1 but should be seen in a future .1.x patch.

It’s apparent that our news updates won’t have as much graphics from week to week as we are getting close to a release candidate for .1. This week’s render will be of a vehicle that has already been shown but had issues. For our initial release the Ukraine team will have the BMP-2 as their primary infantry fighting vehicle. Expect to see this in our next news update with it being in game.

The Testers have been working (playing) hard with Illicitfilms so that we can provide a new teaser flick for your enjoyment. The plan was to release a video with our objective mode for BFCon’06 but we ran out of time. We like to keep our word on things so Illicitfilms was kept in his dungeon till he produced something for your viewing pleasure. With the amount of footage that was gathered we plan on releasing a couple more as Illicitfilms has the time to finish the editing process. The teaser is MPEG-4 format which the latest Quicktime viewer supports.

The movie has also been uploaded to FilePlanet but it might take a few days before they have it listed.
