The "New Horizons" mod for the 2003 Pirates of the Caribbean game by Akella is a continuation of the famous Build mod series. Developed as Pirates of the Caribbean Build 14, "New Horizons" continued where Build 13 left off, adding more new content than ever before.
Do you see what I see?
Interesting...
No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you: That IS one of our "fake" steamships going at 5 knots against the wind without using any sails. In REALISTIC GAME MODE even. In other words, our fake steamships are no longer FAKE steamships but have REAL wind-independent propulsion.
You can set your engine anywhere between full ahead and full astern independent of your sails and this will display properly on the screen as well. The engine even makes sound now. Quite convincing, considering that originally this game doesn't support power-driven vessels at all!
i honestly didnt like that one
its nice to see u guys acomplished something hard
but it doesnt fit the game world
You won't be running into the steamships all the time. There's several time periods in the game and the steamships cannot be encountered until the last two: Revolutions and The Corsican. Even then, they're really very rare.
If you do not play the Master & Commander or Hornblower storylines, you won't ever encounter them, unless you buy one of your own from Captain Hendrick Vanderdecken.
But they really were developing steam ships in the 1800's and this game goes to 1830. So it fits in certain time periods.
wasnt the game timed in 1700 ?
This is neat! I like how the smoke looks.
We've had the visual effects in the game for months already. You can try them out with the current available modpack version Build 14 Beta 1 Patch 6. What's new is the behind-the-scenes workings. Before, the steamships LOOKED like steamships, but didn't genuinely behave that way because they were still sailboats. However, now they really DO have wind-independent propulsion.
So then, do you get a speed boost if you use your engines AND sail with the wind?
Technically you should do, but it doesn't seem to work properly like that. You seem to do the maximum speed when not using sails to assist at all.
Awww :( No bueno.
Still needs some testing I suppose. Should be possible to fix it with some code adjustment.
