Reason why its so odd looking is because after WW1, the Brits had the blueprints for the MP18, the famous Stormtrooper SMG in WW1, and so they made the Lancaster SMG (a direct copy of the MP18) however due to its heavy wooden stock they remade the Lancaster... which is now the Sten, modifications were made over time and eventually the Sterling SMG was the modernized version of the Sten we see today

Description

The STEN (or Sten gun) was a family of British submachine guns chambered in 9×19mm and used extensively by British and Commonwealth forces throughout World War II. STEN is an acronym, from the names of the weapon's chief designers, Major Reginald V. Shepherd and Harold Turpin, and EN for Enfield. The later Mark V models were solid weapons and were modified to accept more ergonomic grips and special versions made featuring integrated suppressors.

Its odd appearance however has raised many questions as to what kind of crack these guys were smoking when they designed it in the first place....
