Nono, it was given in september 1943 secretly to the troops with the code name MP43 becasue Hitler wouldn't fully automatic rifles. Than it was renamed to MP44 without technical changes. After Hitler saw that the troops had this rifle, and it was really effective, the official name were Sturmgewehr 44.

I think the main thing is simply having the mod installed and regularly playing it, in-time, with enough servers online at any given time, the player base should grow.
