First release of my Light Gun. The pickup sprite looks like ass, but that's because I really don't make sprites--never been my thing. All the sprites and sounds I've borrowed for this were made by a guy who I believe goes by Scuba Steve.
This is the very first release of my Light Gun! There might be at least one more to fix the pickup sprite, if anyone's interested in making a better one for me. What can I say? I'm not a spriter. That being said, this gun introduces a pretty cool concept. It's a Plasma Rifle replacement (at least for now) that does no damage. So what does it do?
It was made to light up dark places. Think of it as being somewhere between a flashlight and a flare. Maybe you think flashlights are too overpowered. Maybe flares are too limited. Well now there's this. It shoots a ball of a special energy that drops light crystals on the ground as it flies, until it terminates against a wall or solid object. These crystals create a trail of lights that last for a limited time before they're spent. This allows you to do something like, say, light up a corridor ahead of you before enemies attack from the shadows.
It was adapted from Scuba Steve's Plasma Rifle mod that turns it into Samus Aran's arm cannon. His stuff is here: Doomworld.com.
The Light Gun pairs well with DarkDoom and other really dark mods/wads for an approach balanced toward greater difficulty and more complicated mechanics. Hey, if Doom ever gets boring, you're gonna want stuff like this!
