Interstellar is a futuristic/marine/realism Quake3 mod, it started as a Half-Life mod but has been moved to the Quake3 engine because we thought the end result would be better. The Half-Life engine just cant pull the same visuals that quake3 can, and without 9-way blending in HL "or something", the player models would suck. The model blending has since been released in a sdk but were happy we went q3a, only down side is: Alot more people have Half-Life. We are all realism fans, but we will try _hard_ not to make, "just another clone". While most online realism games are great, the team though that there was plenty of room for improvement, also the realism-terror has been milked dry so we found a better theme for the mod "we think/hope ; )". Some of the games we get our inspiration from includes "MoH:AA, CS, Halo, AVP2, SOF2 and many more". All of us are Sci-fi fans so it came naturally to place the mod in a futuristic universe battling marines against...

We have been looking at several engines, but so far the most interesting engines are by far the Doom3 engine & Source, the Half-life 2 engine.
The Doom3 engine has the right environment for the game, but it’s unknown whether there will support for team based multiplayer gameplay or how hard it will be to make good looking maps.
Source has not got the correct gameplay environment and is missing the full real-time lighting of the maps and models. On the other hand it has got a lot of cool effects that D3 is missing, like Havoc’s behaviour physics engine & really nice shaders that can be applied to any surface.
It’s hard to decide until we get more information from both games, there has been released much newer movies of HL2 then D3, especially ones that show off specific technology.

Doom 3 doesn't have 'behaviour physics' or shaders?

I dident say that Doom3 had no physics or shaders, they do, it's just hard to say how good they will be at release.

Havoc2 the physics engine Valve licensed for Source is pretty cool, I have seen Havoc1 for 3DSMax and it's pretty cool stuff, the physics seen in Doom3 so faar looks good but it's no way near what Havoc2 is, but it's a long time ago since id showed anythign so they could have perfected it.

OFC. Doom3 used shaders, Quake3 was one of the first game to use shaders all through the game maps & models, But what has been shown in the HL2 Tech Movie is absolutely insane, transparency/reflection/refraction water, gotta love that, and thenyou can just smack that shader on any object in the game, gotta love that too. Fire looked great also. I even remeber Carmack stationg that there would be no water in Doom3, they had no need for it in the game so it wouldent be made.

Also the Camera->monitor system in HL2"Source" looks cool.

I still like Doom3 the most but i think it's going to be VERY hard to make maps for the game because of the extensive use of models as map interior, maybe you could do some maps where you used current map "prefabs" but they would grow old fast, it's a whole new ballpark and mappers better sharpen up :D
