INFANTRY MOD PROJECT
I am a programming student and aspiring indie game developer that has chosen to practice and learn by modding one of my favourite third person tactical shooters 'Running With Rifles' while i do my programming course.
The entire project is an exploration in programming, sound creation, texture creation, 3d model creation, sprite creation, map creation - all aimed at making Running With Rifles more realistic audio & visually while maintaining compatibility with the official online invasion servers and most of all to make the game more fun in my own opinion at the very least.
This is no easy task as i would rather be creating entirely new code and scripts rather than moving in and around the existing game code and structure while maintaining compatibility with the official invasion servers, i also have to respect the integrity of the original game while i make my modifications.
To get results out of the game that i want is a challenge and experience will go forward to my own game development in the future.
Even tho the game was created with the Ogre3d rendering engine and i am studying Unity3d game development, there are alot of similarities and it is interesting to see how one does things different to another. The only reason i chose to modify an Ogre3D game instead of a Unity3D game like Kerbal Space Program for example, is because i am a fan of the tactical shooter genre and RWR is the only third person tactical shooter on the market that captures my attention and is intriguing enough to maintain it.
My first modification to a game was all the way back in 1996 with Command & Conquer: Red Alert, since then i have modified games over the years, new textures, model skins, new sound, games that were my favourite at the time i chose to modify and improve, all of this was a personal hobby and never released online, i always liked to delve into the heart of the program and see how it works, what can be changed, back in the day as a kid my friends and i would use hex editors and open up executibles to see what we could change - that was back in the days of DOS - i had an old commodore 64 while my friend had the porsche of the time 'the IBM 386 !' which was new and an upgrade from his old IBM 286 !, all we had was a keyboard, floppy disk drive and VGA CRT monitor, that was high technology back then, compared to our local school that had old mainframe like computers that had to load the operating system at boot up from a floppy disk - and the screen looked like a radar screen from a navy destroyer !
**INFANTRY** is my first online release and the biggest undertaking of modding i have done to any game i have ever played.
It is one hell of a project and learning experience before i enter indie game development.
Stay tuned for i will be bringing more great content to Running With Rifles while i continue my programming course.
Cheers !

The aim of the INFANTRY MOD PROJECT is to turn Running With Rifles
into a more realistic visually & audibly engaging, believable third person tactical shooter,
introducing new game mechanics that respect the integrity of the original game while also being compatible with the official invasion servers.
INFANTRY MOD was originally first launched on Steam Workshop 11th February 2017 as version 1.0
Due to the nature of the mod overwriting vanilla game files and its shear size (in excess of 1GB uncompressed), this has caused much controversy on Steam Workshop and the Steam Workshop Terms of Service, very much so that i have been in private contact with Jack Mayol an RWR developer, he has allowed me to list the mod on Steam Workshop contrary to the terms of services interpretation which is very kind of him to do so.
The mod has simply grown so large now that i cannot feasibly host it on Steam Workshop and have decided to make ModDB the new home of INFANTRY MOD to further develop the mod and give its fans more power through customizability of what they want to download from the INFANTRY MOD PROJECT.
