Starting in 1519, India is Fractured into Several Hindu and Muslim Ruled Empires. Babur the Timurid begins his invasion from Afghanistan. The Portuguese, the first European traders to establish trade colonies in India, have begun their wars against the Muslims. Gunpowder is relatively new and having a strong effect on the peasant and elephant armies traditional to medieval India. =Simpler Submods for a 1725AD and 327BC start date are also in progress. -As of now I have 193 settlements so there is only room for 6 more regions

//Historical Names

Warangal was called Orugallu at the time?

Gingee was called Krishnapura

Golconda fort was called Muhammad nagar

//Scripted Name Changes

Ayad to Udaipur in 1559, scripted so region must belong to Mewar for name change to occur

Prayaga to Allahabad in 1575, scripted so Akbar must enter region for name change

//Settlement Development, arranged by modern names

//Allahabad, Historical name was Prayaga, name changed in 1575 during Akbar's visit

//Chittor was said to contain a large smith

//Delhi

//Goa was said to contain a large cannon factory

//Junnar, (Large Town?) Will have road and market

"Junnar has been an important trading and political center for the last two millennia. The town is on the trade route that links the ports of western India or more specifically of Konkan with Deccan interiors"

//(REGION NOTE) Kathiawar was known for horse breeding so, Dwarka/Diu/Junagadh will contain horse breeder guilds

//Kumbhalgarh, large elaborate fort owned by Mewar

//Ponnani, will have barracks/stables/missile buildings bc it is usually considered as the military capital of the Samutiris of Kozhikode. Will also have cannon towers bc wiki says in 1507 "Ponnani at the time was defended by a strong battery of artillery (forty guns)"

//Ranikot Fort, 20 mile fort in Sindh

//Sultanpur Lodhi, (City) Will have advanced markets and a university,

wiki 1200s "This new city of Sultanpur Lodhi was also the center point of the old trade route between Delhi and Lahore. It was a major trade center of north India at that time. It consisted of 32 major markets and about 5600 shops (Figures are mere estimates). No proof, as yet, with the Author). At that time the city was spread over in an area of 8 miles"

"City had many Islamic schools of education known as "Madarasas". The two princes of Delhi, Aurengzeb and Dara-sekoh completed their studies in one white mosque of Sultanpur Lodhi."

//Udaipur, not founded till 1559, Ayad was former Mewar capital nearby, described as a thriving trading town

//Yavatmal, historical name is ‘Yeoti’ or ‘Yeotmal’. It was a prominent town of the Berar Sultanate and was known as the ‘safest place in the world’.

Zorr shaar meaning "old city" is also known as old kandahar....the citadel was founded by Alexander the great himself....this citadel was destroyed by Nader shah's forces later during his conquest..
...it should be a named fort rather than settlement in Kandahar...and should serve as seat of power in the region...

Also a note: .....the named forts should be implemented only for those which are located within or near the settlement in real life as well.....walled or fortified cities in real life will ofcourse be depicted ingame by the wall upgrade given to the towns in the construction tab....highly famous forts will as usual depicted by fort settlement itself and hence these aforementioned cases will not need a separate named fort for themselves...the named forts will only be for exceptional cases of cities with multiple powerbases..

Another important named fort

Bala hissar fort in peshawar

This named fort will have a strategic value since peshawar is closer to the Khyber pass
Hiuen tsang seemed to have visited this place in 630 AD....he mentions this walled part of the city being the place of royal residence....so we can use this fort to represent the local seat of power

Lahore fort - Named fort near the walled city of Lahore settlement

...the fort is probably 1000 years old and it's history is obscure and it has changed hands multiple times...this section of the city formed the local seat of power and royal residence.....the place underwent renovation and became important from the time of emperor Akbar

Edit regarding Purana qila
.....rename the settlement region as indraprastha
Settlement name is indarpat....starts out as a small wooden walled town
Later develops into walled city of dinpanah....
Renamed by humayun as dinpanah (city of the faithful) in year 1533
Non settlement named stone fort by the name of Purana qila Instead..

This is in keeping with historical accuracy....purana qila literally meaning "old fort" is much much older and is believed to be inhabited for as long as 2500 years....the remains of this site date back to pre-mauryan times as well....however the city of dinpanah and the present citadel "Purana qila" inside the city was laid by humayun....the site on which humayun built the now Purana qila is also supposed to have been the capital city Indraprastha of the pandavas mentioned in the Hindu epic "Mahabharata"...humayun intended the city of dinpanah to be a cultural centre and a rival to the persianate world.....after humayun's loss to Sher Shah, the place passed into suri hands and some parts of the place were pulled down by him inorder to renovate it...it was renamed as shergarh...but after humayun's reconquest of Delhi and re-establishment the place as usual passed again into humayun's hands......the mughal army and royal entourage also halted for a while here after their victory.....this was the first time in 15 years after his exile that humayun would get to set foot on this place again....humayun intended to resume his project on dinpanah but with his untimely death in 1556 the city went into ruins....

Inside the Delhi city/ settlement....a non settlement named stone fort called Lal kot or qila Rai pithora(either is fine)....tho qila Rai pithora is mostly seen as misnomer since there is no concrete evidence for its association with prithviraj chauhan who was the overlord of Delhi and not the local personal governor of Delhi...Delhi seemed to be ruled personally by his brother govind rai....but mughal chroniclers especially Abu fazl in ain I akbari calls it qila Rai pithora
....since the Islamic conquest of Delhi in 1192 the Lal kot- qila Rai pithora place seemed to be used as a local seat of power in Delhi

..the Lal kot - qila Rai pithora is also famously known as one among the famous gates of delhi

Fort settlement named Gadh siwana or simply Fort siwana in rajputana
....the fort was famously besieged by alauddin Khalji's forces....the chieftain sitala deva put up a heroic resistance but the Delhi army was finally successful in capturing the fort...the fort was later captured by rathores of marwar.....with time this fort later fell into the hands of Akbar and he restored it to his Rajput vassal king....this fort will give rajputana a strategic defensive frontier from the Gujarati side...

New city settlement named Kota to the south of bundi and to the right of Taragarh fort in bundi....the place was given by the bundi ruler to his son madho singh as a small fief...but the city developed and outgrew and eclipsed it's parent state of bundi....so much so that it became a separate state/kingdom....later jahangir himself crowned madho Singh as the ruler of kota

Guys since we are already creating non settlement forts which will serve strategic purpose...I'd say instead of the game spawning a fort when a battle involves a temporary fort(the ones that are builadable on campaign map),let it spawn a precreated field fortification model(we might have to create a 3d model that automatically spawns when the enemy initiates battles

We can have a model with elevated platform, stakes and obstacles like fence and ravines(u know those awkward areas on the battle map where u can't deploy and it shows a cross mark...these would simulate trenches)...this model won't be as protective as a fort since obviously it is made for a field battle...
Besides this will make artillery warfare immersive since artillery battles are best fought on the defensive....
This will simulate the general preparing himself for an attack by a larger host in territory he has invaded

This would be somewhat accurate as well...often wars were cautious dragging matches with each army trying to find advantageous terrain...
The sieges on these forts can have lesser deadline times(as they already have I believe)....better still maybe we can tweak the loss taken by the defender depending on whether he camps close to a river or a road

The only challenge here is that we have to create a 3d model.

Guys this is a part of Deccan research...i'll be posting names in stages region wise....obviously I'm combining the settlements that already exist(already added by korgoth) with the ones I researched and posting the ones that are relevant,so feel free to add ur insight if you can make it better

Khandesh Region

Before the mughals, khandesh was ruled by farooqi sultans

1)Thaleshwar Fortress(already ingame as thalner)

Emperor Akbar conquered this fortified town in his Deccan campaign of khandesh...

2)Burhanpur City settlement

3)Asirgarh non settlement stone fort

Both Asirgarh and burhanpur were annexed by Akbar's forces

Berar Region

City settlements

1)Achalpur (ellichpur)
2)Akola
3)Parbhani
4)Nirmal
5)Balapur

Fort settlements

1)Gawligarh

3)Narnala fort/Shahnur qila
4)Sirpur qila
5)Mahurgad

Continued from above...

Golconda region/andhra region (split between the resurgent qutb shahi sultan and Gajapati kings....at the time period of our mod,the 2 kingdoms fought each other over the andhra region)

So basically it's important to understand the dynamics of this period to correctly grasp the territorial extents of qutb shahis and Gajapatis

Until 1518 Golconda was under the bahamanis and all of coastal andhra(which would make up most of what is today's andhra Pradesh) and odisha was ruled by the Gajapatis and their borders touched the Vijayanagara empire

In 1518,the governor of Golconda(as it always happens 😂) broke away from Bahamani sultanate and founded the Qutb Shahi sultanate of Golconda

The Qutb shahis initially would be in control of what today is northern andhra and Telangana

However the powerful gajapatis were dealt a crippling blow by emperor krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara and they never recovered from it

They lost all their gains which tempted the Qutb shahis to remove their weakened holdings

Thus the resurgent qutb shahis dealt the death blow to the already reeling Gajapatis and by 1542,they disappeared into obscurity

Finally after the Gajapati decline the Qutb shahis ruled in entirety(obviously just a safe approximate....hard to say exactly..there is nothing definite in history) what would be the entire state of andhra Pradesh in the republic of India before the change of status quo in 2014(in 2014,the state of andhra pradesh was bifurcated into Telangana and andhra pradesh that u can see in today's India map)

This image below is the map of Andhra Pradesh in the republic of India before 2014

Encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com

This one has a map of Golconda sultanate...

Encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com

Compare these two and u will see they look similar in size...besides the Golconda map might be a little erroneous and it may have had more coastal presence along the bay of Bengal

Note:

When I say andhra region,I'm referring specifically to northern coastal andhra and what today has become telangana(basically heart of the Deccan back in those days) while excluding southern andhra(andhra Pradesh state today also cuts deeper into southern India and includes what was once part of the Vijayanagara empire)...so basically I'm referring to region formerly ruled by qutb Shahis....and the region In today's republic of India terms is northern andhra Pradesh(along with its coastal ports) + telangana parts ...it's important to grasp this notion for simulating 1500s since regional identities and extents have changed over 500 years

I'll cover southern andhra and it's coast as a part of Vijayanagara region since they were ruled by the Vijayanagarans in this time

The following are settlements in qutb Shahi ruled northern andhra Pradesh and it's coast and parts of telangana

City settlements

1)Hyderabad
2)Vishakapatnam (port town)
3)Masulipatnam (port town)
4)Kaki Nandiwada (port town)....presently called Kakinada
5)Rajamahendri/Rajamahendrapuram
6)Amaravati (famous historical city and seat of the ancient satavahana empire)
7)Srikakulam
8)Vengipuram(pedavengi today)
9)Eluru
10)Vijaywada

Fort settlements

Note: "Kota" in telugu means fort/castle

1)Golkonda qila
2)Warangal Kota (already in game as orugallu....change the name)
3)Kondavidu Kota
Fort lay on the frontier between Vijayanagara and Gajapatis...
...kept shifting hands from Gajapati to Vijayanagara then to golconda sultans and then finally fell into Aurangzeb's hands when he ruthlessly trampled down the Deccan Sultanates

Non settlement stone fort
1)Kondapalli Kota
I only intended it to be a frontier...so maybe we can wholly ignore this as well

If huzurat has any additional info on the thriving centres, forts or cities of the Golconda sultanate please add them below and feel free to correct any wrong info that I may have elaborated here

The remaining qutb Shahi telangana region will be broken down in the next post

To be continued.....

Guys this completes "Golcondaite Andhra and Telangana" Research
This was one big pain to finish...there were too many forts and places...many times very difficult to identify the significance of these places...after multiple searches and researching, eventually i found these places to be ideal for the time period

The "Vijayanagaran Andhra and Telangana" areas will be covered as a part of Vijayangaran research

Western Telangana research
i did this separately because golconda and golconda proper needed a western frontier and forts

Fort settlements
1)Medak Kota/ was also called Methuku durgam
Built during 12th century by Kakatiyas
2)Nizamabad Qila
3)Kaulas/Kowlas Kota
strategic fort located at the trijunction of Karnataka,Telangana and Maharashtra.....fort was built by rashtrakutas....will act as westernmost frontier

4)Qila Ghanpur
was built in the 13th century and shifted hands many times...this will act as south-western frontier for Golconda

5)Ravadurg/Gooty fort
the citadel shifted hands between Vijayanagar, qutb shahis and finally passed into Aurangzeb's hands in his deccan conquest...later fell into british hands...this will be the final frontier between qutb shahis and vijayanagara

6)Bhongir/Bhuvanagiri Kota (optional)

7)Konda Reddy Kota (optional)

City Settlements
1)Kurnool
near Kurnool we could possibly add Konda Reddy Kota/fort as a non settlement stone fort...both the city and the fort grew up together and the fort lies in the heart of the city...the settlement will be a frontier between Vijayanagara and qutb shahis

Central Golconda research

City settlements
1)Nalgonda
has a long history and was ruled by most pan-indian empires....swapped hands multiple times throughout indian history

Fort settlements
1)Rachakonda Kota
the rulers of this stronghold switched their loyalties multiple times between Bahmanis, vijayanagara and Gajapatis

Northern Telangana frontier

Fort settlements
1)Ramagiri Qila
2)Elgandal Kota

Eastern Telangana frontier

Fort settlement
1)Khammam Kota

Nirmal in Telanagana is full of forts, but research told me that many of these were constructed the in 17th century and much later...so i avoided those places

This Post and my above post on Golconda settlements should be clubbed together and seen as one research

Thanks!!

KrishnaCN On the Gond area, since I only have region spaces for 2 or more settlements and since it was historically pretty sparsely inhabited, we can't add many settlements so I'm mainly interested in the 'named' forts that should be added. Also I'm unsure of the size of the territory ruled by Sangram Shah in 1519 and how many of his '52 Garh's' he had conquered by then, and the names of the important/large/strategically located Garhs

I'm not sure what year this is supposed to be but it's the only map i've seen so I'm assuming it's an okay starting point

How many settlements can you afford to give Gondwana at best??....knowing this would make my research easier since i would know what to keep in mind while doing it

as for Population,i don't think any part in India at any point in history was sparsely populated XD XD .....you will find more people living here between 2 villages than any metropolitan city in the US or any other western country

the Garha kingdom(which is actually one of the 4 kingdoms ruling gondwana) had ruled over 80,000 villages...though it was a 52 fort state, the kingdom sprawled over such a considerable part of the country

KrishnaCN At best we can add 1-3 regions to the Gondwana area, but I'm all for adding as many named forts as needed of course. Sorry sparsely 'populated' was the wrong wording, a lot of the older and more basic maps I've seen show large blank spaces in that area so I was going off of that

i was also beginning to think that instead of streamlining settlement progression strictly into fort and city types,we might as well strike a middle path and offer 3 conversions

A fort outpost type fully military oriented with little economic activities and professional units
A city settlement type completely urban with large scale economic activities and guarded by merchant guild recruits, urban and rural levies
A special settlement type(like capitals and economic/provincial capitals/centres of empires) with both military and economic orientation but we can make this type costly for construction

this will resolve the limited flexibility of those factions with fortresses as capitals

Bijapur Sultanate Region

This completes the Bijapuri research and covers major areas...The region under Adil Shahi rule is a bit tricky but is possible to grasp with an intelligent guess....this was even more crazier than Golconda due to lack of concrete sources.....the research was again confusing and i had to go through all major towns and cities of Belgaum,Bagalkot,Bijapur,Gulbarga,Raichur,Yadgiri,Kolhapur,Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts(Of Karnataka and Maharashtra)

its a bit diffficult to guess because the Adil Shahis ruled over what would be North Karnataka and Southern Maharashtra....so if u guys have any important city please add them here

City Settlements
1)Dabhol
A port city settlement

2)Ratnagiri
city settlement

3)Kolhapur
city settlement

4)Bagalkote
city settlement

5)Talikote
A small village-Site of the famous Battle

6)Hatti
A small village with potential for gold mining

7)Mudgal
Town settlement in the fertile raichur Doab

8)Sindhanur(optional)
Town Settlement in the fertile raichur doab..Sindhanur is is called "paddy Granary" of Raichur but i couldn't dig any historical sources on this place

9)Yadagiri
Small Town settlement

10)Badami(optional)
11)Pattadakal(optional)
12)Aihole(optional)

However I believe these(Badami,Aihole and Pattadkal) are mostly heritage towns and i felt they weren't relevant to the scenario....i wasn't able to find enough association of these sites with sultanate era maybe because of my lack of knowledge...unfortunately my history is vastly Indo-Gangetic oriented and i can't help it....I was hoping i could find some important economic centres for Bijapur Sultanate so if u guys have some ideas please mention them and i'll add them

Fort Settlements
1)Bijapur Qila
Capital of the Sultanate

2)Malkhed
Eastern frontier of kingdom and protects it

3)Raichur Kote
Eastern frontier and hotly contested by Bijapur and Vijayanagara...economic centre and strategic location in the Raichur Doab

4)Mudgal Kote(near Mudgal Town - see above city settlements)
fort in the the western Half of the Raichur Doab...in 1520 after the Battle of Raichur, the Vijayanagara Emperor Krishnadevaraya's army routed the Adil shahi forces with assistance from portuguese and occupied the entire Raichur doab...the Bijapuris were pushed Beyond the Krishna river

5)Belgaum Kote(Belgaum today is called "Belagavi")
Southern Frontier and protects Bagalkot and Bijapur from Vijayanagaran incursions

6)Ratnadurg(near Ratnagiri settlement)
for recruitment in Northern Part of the Sultanate as all the ones i researched in the north are good enough to be Non-Settlement Stone Forts only....besides Ratnagiri was an administrative centre during Adil Shahi rule

Non-Settlement Named Stone Forts
1)Yellurgad
This lost fort is an extension of the Belgaum Fort's Southern frontier...its abandoned today and is in ruins...its sad to see these forts abandoned

2)Vijaydurg
An Adil shahi fort snatched by Shivaji much later...forms the Southwestern frontier

3)Shahapur Kote
Eastern frontier

4)Yadagiri Kote
near Yadagiri Town

5)Himmatgad
protects Dabhol port town from the north

6)Rangana Qila(optional)
forms the Southwestern frontier below the Vijaydurg Fort

7)Manvi Kote(optional)
I don't see this is necessary...add only if u feel u need more forts...

8)Jaladurga(optional)
Lies between Talikota and Hatti...built by Adil Shahi rulers...u may consider this worthy to be added

9)Rasalgad
10)Mahipatgad
11)Sajjangad

All three forts protect Dabhol and the Northern part of the Sultanate from the east....Again all 3 are Optional

12)Samangad(optional)

Just visualise these locations with some help from maps and u will see cities and towns strategically surrounded by forts on most sides

That Completes Bijapur Sultanate Regions....Thanks

These are additional regions for which i found references in my books

Bidar Region Addendum

1)Udgir Fort settlement

a western frontier for the Barid shahi Bidar sultanate...borders the Bijapur sultanate...i found a historical reference to this place

apparently Amir Barid retreated from Bidar Fort to Udgir fort when the Bijapur Sultan attacked his domains

later on it passed into the hands of Emperor Shah Jahan's imperial army

2)Humnabad Qila(optional)

Non settlement stone fort
unfortunately no proper association with the era...no info online

Berar Region Addendum

1)Pathri Qila
A Fort settlement or Non Settlement Stone Fort(whatever u please)

This fort was coveted by Nizam Shahi ruler Burhan Nizam shah of Ahmednagar because apparently it was his ancestral home...The fort however lay in Imad Shahi Berar Sultan Alauddin Imad Shah's hands

Burhan offered to cede another place with far higher revenue in exchange for peaceful transfer of Pathri....but Alauddin instead refused and fortified it....in 1518 Burhan made a surprise attack and took it

Alauddin in response built an alliance and retook it somewhere in 1526/27....but again it seems Burhan recaptured it from Alauddin

I was able to locate Pathri fort online and found a travel blog mentioning the Berar-Ahmednagar conflict over this place albeit with a much vague version but i'm not sure if by Pathri my book means the fort of pathri or the town itself but i guess the fort is a safe guess to go with

Bijapur Sultanate Region Addendum
1)West Gulbarga
A city settlement

like i mentioned earlier the Gulbarga district today fell partly under Barid Shahi Bidar and Adil Shahi Bijapur....so west Gulbarga is a complementary settlement to the East Gulbarga in Bidar

However if KingKorgoth or huzurat have a better idea to represent this shared holding then please go ahead

Sometimes i wonder if my research is actually historically authentic or not because most of these places were compiled and selected from the net and some books after i found association of them with the time period....i wonder how authentic wikipedia and the net are...besides i'm no historian myself, only an enthusiast :(

Just add 2 forts
1)Sialkot
2)Asigarh(not to be confused with existing Asirgarh fort in burhanpur khandesh)

I'll leave the settlement type to ur discretion.Make it a fort settlement or stone fort...ur choice.Given the number of settlements we already have I'd say let these be stone forts

KrishnaCN Thanks They're added, and the next release (in a few days) will have named minor forts, also I do plan on adding more custom forts to show how some were surrounded by moats/on hills/or had space on the walls for cannons
Not sure how to properly represent island forts like Janjira/Anjediva and how they were used to protect the entrances to rivers sometimes, I'll think more on it but if you have any ideas please share

We'll keep the uniqueness of the fort models for the end since we must finish the mod first...anyhow when the mod is close to completion and when we start playing it we'll be able to assess if the sheer number of settlements and forts is actually good or bad...in that event we can review all the settlements again(this also enables me to complete my tedious Deccan research especially the Vijayanagar,Ahmednagar and gondwana areas)
And decide which to keep..after this we can decide on fort specifics

After this we also need to decide on administrative centres/capital settlements of the map for the starting position and decide their proportional population and income etc etc

KrishnaCN Sorry for the delay, I added all of these except Aurangabad/Khaḍkī, I'm going to keep it out of this mod because it wasn't founded till 1610, it will be included in the 1700 mod though

Maybe consider adding Bhera,Kalanaur ,Milwat,Dipalpur,Jalandhar in Punjab region...these places have historical significance and its a part of an interesting story of power struggle..

Here is an interesting snippet....

Around 1519,2 important events transpired...Forts of bajaur (gabarkot) and Bhera/Bhira(was taken for ransom and was spared the fate of Bajaur)were taken by Babur....around this time he also supposedly allied and then fought(because a new usurper reneged on the previous pact) subjugated and reconciled with Gakhars whose base was the Pharwala fort(which was given back after victory)....

It is after these expeditions that Babur laid a vague claim to the areas of the punjab and sent an emissary to sultan Ibrahim Lodi.

The envoy was however stopped at lahore by Daulat khan lodi, sultanate governor of punjab en-route to delhi. He rejected Babur's claims over punjab and even dismissed Babur's officials in Bhera...

However in 1519-20,Babur led another expedition retook bhera and conquered as far as Sialkot(which was considered a gateway into the sultanate). But alarming news came from the west about the arghunid sultan of kandahar(i've expanded on the arghunid sultanate and their struggles with Babur in the family trees' section) and Babur went back west to control the situation..

But his conquest of sialkot triggered a diplomatic activity and in the coming days the diplomatic traffic to kabul increased....various discontented sultanate nobles sought Babur's help...Daulat by now having realised the intent of delhi court sent his son dilawar to negotiate a truce in 1521-22.It also seems that it was around this time that Babur also recieved an envoy from Maharana Sangram singh to invade delhi...There is a very good chance Maharana Sanga expected Babur to plunder delhi and go back to kabul after which he could occupy the vacuum in North india created by the defeat of lodis..or perhaps he expected the victor of the conflict to be vulnerable and then take advantage of the situation.

Alam khan lodi(also regnally titled Alauddin khan lodi) a pretender to the delhi throne and ibrahim's uncle also went to kabul to negotiate his position as well...though all their motives are impossible to guess it seems as though the initial agreement between Babur and the sultanate dissenters was that Alam khan would gain the delhi throne and daulat khan would retain his powerbase in lahore(whilst ceding certain areas of the punjab to Babur including the ones he had conquered upto this point)...

This is where it all gets interesting and funny....Babur as time would prove instead, kept expanding his terms of negotiation as and when his military position became stronger...it turned out that all of them misread his hunger..

The upcoming events would prove fortunate for Babur as in 1522 he would go on take Kandahar(like i mentioned before in family tree section)and secure his south-western frontier. After this his position in balkh would grow strong as well..

Meanwhile Sultan Ibrahim having heard of his nobles' intrigues at Kabul dispatched the sultanate forces. The sultanate armies evicted Daulat from lahore effectively rendering him useless as an ally to Babur. When Babur arrived in Punjab proper at lahore in 1524 he found that Daulat had been driven away and the city was in sultanate occupation.

The sultanate forces sallied out to give battle and Babur consequently routed them off the field and conquered lahore, burning parts of it for 2 days.

Thus Babur became the defacto master of Punjab.Daulat's defeat at the sultanate hands simply eliminated an ally too powerful...it simply made Babur's conquest of punjab easier for him...He no longer had any use for Daulat khan...

This is evident in his future terms of negotiation...Babur now in a stronger position assigned sultanpur and jullunder(Jalandhar) to Daulat instead of Lahore.Alam khan lodi was assigned Dipalpur. Thus the struggle for mastery of north india was triggered by an escalation of violence that began for the mastery of the Punjab...Daulat was predictably unhappy with his new assignments and went into hiding with his son Ghazi khan. His other son Dilawar khan would betray and accept sultanpur.

But it is suspect if Babur had any imperial ambitions over delhi immediately after taking the Punjab...He may have nursed ambitions over delhi from the beginning. As time would show alam khan was evicted from dipalpur by Sultanate forces dispatched by Sultan Ibrahim..Alam khan now without a fief once again sought the help of Babur who instructed his begs(officials) in lahore to support him against Ibrahim's forces. He also promised to back him up but he couldnt for other circumstances(problems in balkh if I'm not wrong). The pact between Babur and alam khan entailed alam taking the delhi throne and Babur retaining his holdings in Punjab. Thus the prelude for panipat began with babur hoping to install a friendly monarch at delhi.

Alam khan took daulat's sons and with an army began marching towards delhi. He was approached by the now disaffected Daulat but it seems his assistance was declined since he was no longer on friendly terms with Babur.

They besieged Sultan ibrahim at Delhi...Ibrahim sallied out of delhi and routed them off the field putting an end to all their ambitions.

Upon hearing of alam's failure and daulat switching sides once again,Babur returned to punjab.Upon his arrival Daulat and his forces melted away and along with his son ghazi khan fled to fotress of milwat.Babur laid siege to milwat and daulat finally surrendered and he died en-route to bhera where he was to imprisoned. Thus in less than 3 weeks of crossing the Indus,Babur had become the undisputed master of Punjab.

Over time daulat proved to be an unreliable ally and kept oscillating between aiding and opposing Babur while his sons either opposed or sided with Babur. This explains the inconsistencies of unfolding of events.Daulat may have hidden his opposition and also shifted his loyalties multiple times in between events making it difficult to gather the exact chronology of events described in sources (even on the internet)

It is evident how with passage of time Babur's terms grew tougher and tougher as his military position grew more and more stronger.

Nevertheless Alam khan's failure and daulat's expiry left Babur as the only power capable of taking on Ibrahim. After Alam's failure Babur realised that ibrahim would not let him rule Punjab and that he had no intention whatsoever of ceding it to him.Ibrahim however could not let Babur linger in the punjab because he could use it as a staging point for further expeditions. This undeniably left them both on a collison course where only one would prevail.Had Daulat thrown in his lot with ibrahim much earlier before his surrender at milwat,Babur might have been in a precarious position.

He needed kabul to protect himself from the Uzbeks.Kabul and its surroundings in afghanistan hardly yielded any income and he needed the fertile tracts of the Punjab to sustain himself. To defend his existence in punjab he needed a "Panipat".It may have been that it was at this time that Babur fully decided to make a gamble for delhi itself and expand eastwards.

Thus it was a fortuitous turn of events that unfolded which he took complete advantage of.Not a one dimensional well planned invasion to conquer as most would believe. He was expansionist no doubt but it was not a decision made once on the spot.

It is funny how attempts to escape the Uzbeks and to defend his existence in the punjab ultimately escalated into a conflict for the mastery of delhi and north india itself. The subsequent events at Panipat need no mention.
