The goal of this mod is to bring back the units from the original Homeworld into the Homeworld 2 engine, with high quality texture and polycount detail. The campaign and animatics from the original game will also be included.
Taiidan "Qwaar-Jet" Heavy Cruiser Remastered
Though terrifying in game this was never a ship i liked very much, the shape was too simple, and the rear turret arms were awkward, but the front had good potential, i tried to improve it all without changing too much.
Epic work :D
It's very cool.
If I may ask, will you make the Ion beam turrets target-able?
please do not make all the turrets target-able because then you would just put it out of function entirely without actually destroying the ship.
However the engines should also be target-able.
But that would enable others to take out the ship easily, also a good reason to put fighter escort on this one.
Oh god.
(the ship is beautiful, just they did a bad model u.u)
The tech back then, was quite limited.
Yes I know, I was just defending the ship :)
ALRIGHT now we're getting into the good stuff
You have done some things differently than I would have done, but I'm glad you've made the ship. And the texture is great.
Epic work.
Wow I just love this ship epic work on it!
Hmmm...
Not sure I like the bridge textures, they seem awkward. Have to see it in-engine with the rest of the fleet before I comment on the textures as a whole. I assume you'll fix the parts where the textures are not lined up properly.
Hard to comment on the rear turret arms with the lighting and angles, but the rest of the model changes look fine to me. I agree it isn't the best model in HW1, and have no idea why some people like it so much.
I'm one of those who like Qwaar-Jet, but it isn't much about a visual appeal. I really like the ship and I still think it's one ugly thing. And that's what's so great about it, it's a mean and ugly termite-like monster. His purpose is to be brutal, not to look nice.
It's just that this model doesn't exactly capture it for me. The ridges around the head kind of spoil the impression of having no neck, if that makes any sense.
Sure, i accept that, what would you have done differently then?? because my main problem here was keeping it true to the original, any suggestions?
When I look at old Qwaar-Jet I see those:

The last isn't Qwaar-Jet, but all of them have the front hull smooth as an alien head.
I like the bug or alien head look, this is how I see it (a comparison of your model and my suggestion):

Thinking about it back I maybe made it too round, but it still shows what I mean pretty well.
For me it's way too round, i prefer the left, more rough model.
I made it a little less sharp angled, but still rough and threatening like a military ship is supposed to be.
Ok I understand you, I know what you mean, so we can just agree to disagree. It's your model and you see it differently than me and you'll keep it that way, I know. And I mean it's nice, it's pretty great already. But even knowing it will have the minimal effect, I'd still like to explain why I don't agree and why in my opinion the military roughness isn't what's going on here:
The original model smoothing groups never ever suggested any sharp edges around the main hull. The thing is simply smooth -both roundish and without any big extending panels around the long body:

Interesting is that if you'd ask me if I'd rather chamfer and round the edges or remove the panels, I would remove the panels. Or at least the front one. The smoothness is the main theme for me here.
Also you were talking about military roughness. Another way to explain my view is that it's not what I see in Qwaar-Jet. I see military simplicity, plainness and massiveness. Qwaar-Jet is like a stone with rounded edges, which is still an instrument hard and brutal enough to hit pretty good.
Yeah but I know we disagree and I'm not going to keep pressing on this thing. I just wanted to say it. What triggered the need was probably the word "supposed to", sorry, that's so typical me.
The ship is really good, I like it. I just personally would have done some things slightly differently, that's all.
Exactly The Qwaar-Jet is a Taiidan ship and it's ment to look like a military ship.
