Half-Life Rally is a racing modification for the highly acclaimed and everlastingly popular game, Half-Life by Valve Software. Unlike most mods currently being made for the Half-Life Engine, the goal of HL-Rally is not to blast your enemy to smitherines with relentless repetition prone to excessive cheating and hacks, but to race cars and be the first and fastest across the finish line, out-running your opponents in any way possible to gain a few milliseconds on them. And if you cant win straight away, fear not, as within a couple of races you can save up your credits salary to upgrade your car with a plethora of parts and options, even buying new cars, or trading cars with your fellow racers and enthusiasts. The game takes on a whole new edge when it comes to strategically spending your cash and keeping your winning record rolling. Sophisticated statistics, profiles and your on-line garage are centrally stored on our master servers, so you'll never be without your custom modified...

Um... This is a beta? Or alpha? I'm confused.... There's lots of problems. Its not very fun. The cars skid way too much, and the downhills are unstoppable. It's like the breaks don't work. Good job on the car models though. I like the tracks too.

I never said it was hard... But that's not the worst problem. All the sprites are messed. I can't see the top half of the cars. 1 of many problems.

I don't know why so many think it's so hard! I think this mod is easy to play.

I think it is one of the beste HL Mods ever made.

@mystery8
You can play it without having installed Steam. I do so. Just move the hlrally directory in your Half-Life directory after you have installed the game. Then you can select it in "Costumize Game" and can play it :-)
I hadn't any problems so far.

If you habe terrible graphics bug, you should change your video settings in Half-Life. Don't use the Software mode, try OpenGL or DirectX (haven't test it, but should also work) and it looks much better and it's playable.

But I must admit that there are still some graphics bugs with my settings, for example half cars at the countdown or the view setting aren't saved. Or the pings are very high and sometimes it lags to much. But that's why the beta is out - I think.

Some tracks seem to be really hard (timelimit!) and first the cars are very difficult to handle. But after that time it really makes fun! I must play it again now :-)

3, actually. A little over.

For what they managed with a small team and group of contributors (myself included) working on it in their spare time, it came out pretty good for that amount of time. This "it took that long to make this?" thing is a load of crap - mod development isn't full time and you can't even begin to compare the time it takes to make something in your spare time with people that in most cases you'll never even see in person to, say a full scale AAA development team and budget working full time 8 hours a day. That doesn't include crunch, in which developers typically spend months on end working long hours (9, 10, and more) and weekends to get the game done on time and even then they can get delayed. You then expect a mod team 1/3rd the size or less of a development studio working about 1/3rd or less (often less) the hours of a full time team every day and on no pay to churn something just as good as a retail product in the same amount of time? Uh-uh. Doesn't work that way.

Not liking it is perfectly fine, but I can't buy this criticism for taking 'too long.' :P

I think personally that its a bloody good effort personally and really pushing the limits considering that this modification is unique on the Halflife engine, hence they had no base to build it from.

Unfortunatly I havn't had the chance to play it yet, however I was fortunate enough to try one of the first alphas and it was a blast back then, so i'm looking forward to it

Intense is right, this is a very new concept on HL mods, and is really pushing the limits on the HL engine and seeing what the HL engine can REALLY do. Personally, I think it turned out nice with a small team working part time as KFS has stated above. A very, very new concept to the Half-Life engine and a very good one at that, this mod was worth the wait in my opinion.

Besides, it's only the 1st beta. Cut them some slack.
