Most color textures have been upscaled by x2, some have been done x4. Minimum of 1024x*

Description

Upscaled normal and color maps with higher quality AI model. Maximum stable resolution is 1080p. All transparent textures are using DXT5, and are fixed now. No textures for campaign, unless they're also used in MP.

Will there be a 2k/4k version?

Unfortunately due to the limitations of the actual game that would be impossible. The x32 coding prevents the game from allocating the necessary resources, no matter the quality of the actual textures. Essentially I have maximized the quality and size of the texture files to the point that it's more or less impossible to have a stable 2k/4k resolution.

There is a 4GB patcher that could perhaps increase the allocation to suite 2k to 4k textures, try the 4GB Patcher on the game and then give it a shot.

Do you have a link to this 4gb Patcher for mw2?

You can just use the NTcore one.

I tried 4k with an NTcore modified executable, and so far stable. I do have a different GPU now though, 12GB RTX 3060

Works with the vanilla version of the game?

Probably not because last time I modded the vanilla game's textures, it would crash with textures over 1024 on textures that weren't suppose to be 1024. For example, if a floor texture is 512x512 and I replaced it with a 1024x1024 texture, the game would crash.

Sadly, even with the latest version its still pretty messy. As I shown in the main page's comments, transparencies for plants break and certain textures look incorrect. A lot of the normal maps were incorrectly generated it seems. You can see incorrect normals on Terminal's planes, US Marine arms, and the USP (as lights/environmental lighting reacts to the normal maps, parts of the model no longer get shaded all together which is not intended).

I would love to redo the mod with better AI available now, as well as my GPU upgrade. However, all of the tools and programs I used are lost to time, I can't remember most of them. Only thing I remember is the program I used for recompressing the DDS files was a skyrim mod tool.

I actually ended up trying to redo it today, I was able to put together another toolkit of programs, and I'm currently running a x2 upscale.

If I have time, I'm hoping to nitpick certain things to create specific mods, I.E. Player models, view-hands, guns, plants, ground and wall/building textures, all separate so they can be added and removed to test stability. That would allow me to optimize what's important.

Thats great to hear. I too was doing some experiments on separating textures and seeing what I can do to stabilize the game. It should be noted that some multiplayer maps will crash on load randomly (current latest release of your mod). What can be annoying is the texture names, they're long and could be tricky to identify which is why separating for me took a while. Weapons/viwmodels are usually easier to find because they have common prefixes. Another strange issue is the game does not seem to crash at three or four gigabtyes despite being 4GB aware (according to Task Manager). The client has some interesting information when loading CO-OP which tells you how much memory was used and remaining I believe. Sorry to hear about the loss of the tools, not sure why people haven't published more documentation on modding Call of Duty. About that DDS tool for Skyrim, I wonder if that was the cause to have broken normals/transparency textures and to some degree, broken diffuse textures. This game engine can be picky at times for what tool you used.

I'm currently using a tool to try and parse images used in only the MP map fast files, then I'm going to sort everything and play around with img2img stable diffusion to see if I can get it to remaster the images entirely. Maybe end up with some interesting results that way. However I am going to continue working on the mod of just enhancements seperately. The new RTX algorithm on the waifu2x software is able to process 2x enhancement on 1500 files in just under an hour using my new GPU. So if you also have a list of files you want to get enhanced we can setup a shared google drive to collaborate.

I took a break in my attempts at getting a full texture overhaul to work because I get errors of out of memory or unable to create specific texture. I tried looking around in the game's config to expand the memory usage but the command to do so does nothing in Modern Warfare 2 it seems. The engine might not like textures over a certain MB, it mentions how it failed to create a 21MB image.

I have tried the v1.2 of your mod.
I like it.
There were some minor issues.
I think I have a really quick fix.

Favela crashed ,got message ,"pickup destroyed nml (out of video memory)(FAVELA)". So I deleted 2 pickup destroyed files in the zip/iwd.

Next problem ,there is a big red tree in Mission Map ,which does not look correct. Also a few other maps had a slight foliage problem -leaves red and appearing/disappearing. These issues seemd hard to fix ,so I took a simple approach. I removed files in zip/iwd that had the following 2 names-
canopy
tree.
This removed 44 files ,I am sure most of these are good ,but my fix is quick and simple.

After doing these 2 things the HD MOD does not crash on FAVELA and the red tree issue seems to be gone.
Perhaps other users can try this ,or author can maybe look at these files closely ,until he comes up with another edited version.
By the way I think the MOD even less my edits is very nice and I am gratefull for the work done in creating it.
I merely give some constructive feedback and a possible solution as well.
Look forward to next version of mod.
Thank you very much for making this.
I am testing on IW4X with bots by the way ,in case that has a significance.
