'Freespace: Evolution' aims to bring the frantic non-stop action of the original games to the tactical realm of a real-time-strategy game. Step out of your fighter cockpit and prepare to experience the world of Freespace from a completely different perspective.
The GTC Aeolus-class cruiser is calling in fighter support, which is promptly warping in from subspace. Actually they're not really warping in... technically they're "undocking" from the Aeolus, but after some tweaking it now looks like a proper, animated FS2 warp-in effect :)
Doesn't make a difference gameplay-wise, but allows me to get fighters into a mission without needing to send in a massive carrier-size vessel - Nexus doesn't allow fighters operating without a carrier, so this Aeolus now gets to be one, despite lacking a hangar bay.
awesome effect! With B5 code you could probably be able to have it for capitol ships as well.
BTW: did you build that effect using only textures and efx??
Yes, it's an animated texture. Like any sprite effect, it's always facing the camera, so it doesn't really look 3d... but given the small size and the nature of the effect, it looks good enough to pass.
I had a look at the B5 code, but that seemed to be a lot of work. Might be worth it for the capitals for sure, but I suppose there'll be a problem with the animation... FS2's warp effect heavily relies on animated textures to look good and that's not possible with Nexus' meshes, as far as I know.
I think it can... did you see the effect on B5?the vortex's texture looked like they were rotating or something.
If you want a hand with the b5 code, I can help, I've been messing with it for a long time now, for WB.
I think it's only the mesh rotating, not an animated texture. I'm not sure this'll look as good with Freespace's warp effect, but it's probably worth a try. First I'll bring more FS ships to Nexus, though.
exiting hyperspace commander, great job on the effect's we are going to make ftl effect's for the bsg mod :)
Can't wait to see them, I love BSG :)
