Echoes of a Bygone Age is a work in progress mod for Mount and Blade: Warband, that will take place in a low fantasy world, where a once mighty empire has collapsed leaving behind many small City States, who are locked in a bitter struggle for control. Each seeks to rebuild the old Empire, but only one can succeed. Or perhaps, a new power will rise, and rebuild the old Empire how it was built - through conquest.

The Chancellery of Daenlan

Overview

Daenlan was one of the last regions the old Empire conquered before their collapse one century ago. In the short time that they were under the Empire they would take on few of its customs, but the Empire did influence something in Daenlan dramatically: Religion. The Imperial Church began to expand into the region soon after it was conquered, and the Imperial faith began to spread quickly. Indeed, today the Cross of the Imperial Church sits prominently on the flag of Daenlan.

After the collapse of the Empire Daenlan rapidly marched on their neighbor, Norvei, and took it after a prolonged siege. Because of this, Daenlan hold more territory than most, and is not just a city state. Despite their larger territory, Daenlan is at disadvantage to the other factions, as Daenlan does not have very advanced technology. Still, Daenlan is a powerful force on the battlefield. They have strong infantry, and capable but poorly equipped ranged troops. Most Daenlan troops are equipped with Halberds, but the poorer and lesser equipped troops in their armies use spears. Because they are at a disadvantage against armies with lots of strong ranged weapons, it is best to use terrain to protect them or use cavalry to distract the enemies and allow the infantry to reach the enemy.

Military

Daenlan fields mostly Halberdiers and arquebusers, with very little cavalry. Daenlan foot soldiers wear a variety of equipment, with the more lesser equipped troops wearing gambesons or tunics, while the more skilled and better equipped soldiers wear mail and plate. Daenlan footmen make up the backbone of the Daenlan military, with mail and some plate, and are easy to spot as they display the Cross of the Imperial church, and other crosses associated with the church.

Daenlan relies on a strong infantry force, with support from fast cavalry and strong ranged units. Their tactics are similar to pike and shot armies, though they are somewhat different. Using their halberds Daenlan troops are capable against both infantry and cavalry, though are at a disadvantage against line infantry from factions such as Corwell or Wehrhilm.

The best troops in the Daenlan army are the Lordsguard (Jarllsgurdr in the Daenlan tongue), who serve as guards to the Chancelleries lords. Lordsguard wear full plate armor adorned with the cross of the Imperial Church.

In battle, Daenlan troops will do best against enemies who do not have line infantry or musketeers, such as Aurelia. Because they themselves have some guns, they can gain an advantage over Aurelian troops who, while being better in melee, have no real counter to firearms.

Government

During the time of the Old Empire, there were many chancelleries established to administrate different regions within the Empire. Daenlan was the last of these to be established, and Daenlan is the only faction to have kept the chancellery as their government. The Chancellor exercises considerable power over the nation, but is restricted somewhat by a council appointed by prominent nobles of the region. Currently Daenlan is led by the half Daen, half Verician Carl Ustellius II.

Conclusion

That's it for Daenlan, at least for now. There are more pictures of Daenlan troops in the images section of the page, and maybe soon there will be a video showing these troops in battle.
