Atmospheric immersion into a "Doom-Real" environment. Actually believe you are in a real base. Actually be there fighting to survive and win the day. These are the goals of Dragon Sector. Hi-res texturing. Immersive ambient sounds. Realistic environments. They're all here. If realistic play is your preferred game, then Dragon Sector just might take you as close as you're ever to get to "really being there" in a retro-Doom game!

Report RSS How to run Dragon Sector (The Remake)

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to get Dragon Sector up and running. We hope it helps out anyone having problems getting it going.

Posted by on - Basic Installers

This post will guide you through getting the mod going. These instructions include downloads for Project Brutality. This mod is recommended to use, and we're building the maps to make them fun while using it, but it is not specifically required to run the maps. If you just want to play it with normal Doom weapons, you may omit that download.

Getting up and running is pretty straightforward. These steps should get you up and running in just a few minutes. These instructions are for Windows.

Running The Full Pack

  1. Download the current Dragon Sector (The Remake) Full package.
  2. Unzip the Dragon Sector (The Remake) zip file.
  3. Download Doom II from Steam or GoG. If you install it in the default folder GZDoom will automatically find it.
  4. Double click dragon-sector-remake.cmd.
  5. GZDoom's launcher will pop up. If you have a fairly modern graphics card, select Vulkan as the renderer in the Video Settings section at the bottom-left. Under Extra Graphics at the bottom-right, check Lights and Brightmaps. Lights are required for this map pack to look correct.
  6. Go into the options and map your controls and set your graphics settings to suit your tastes. There is also a section of settings specific to Project Brutality that you'll want to go through, as there are a number of options that will change the gameplay and visuals/audio dramatically. Experiment until you find the style you like.

Running The Maps From The PK3

  1. Download GZDoom from the ZDoom.org Website.
  2. Unzip the file into its own folder.
  3. Download Project Brutality 3.0 from the Github Repository. Click on the "Code" button, then download ZIP.
  4. Rename the zip file, changing the extension from zip to .pk3.
  5. Download the current Dragon Sector (The Remake) PK3.
  6. Unzip the Dragon Sector (The Remake) zip file.
  7. Download ZDL from the Github Repository.
  8. Unzip ZDL to its own folder, then launch ZDL.exe.
  9. Go to the Settings Tab, this is where we'll add the source port and your DOOM II WAD.
  10. In the Source Port Panel, click Add and browse to your gzdoom.exe file. We recommend filling in the name field in case you want to have multiple versions down the line. Click OK to save this entry.
  11. In the IWADs panel, click Add and then browse to your DOOM2.wad file. Again we recommend giving it a name, since you have several games here. If you downloaded it from Steam or GoG, GZDoom will be able to find it automatically at launch, but ZDL will not let you proceed unless there is an IWAD present. Once you've got it selected, click OK to save the setting.
  12. Switch over to the Main tab of the ZDL interface.
  13. Under Main Files, click Add, and select the Project Brutality and Dragon Sector PK3s.
  14. Make sure that Project Brutality is at the top, and Dragon Sector is at the bottom of the list.
  15. Click on your DOOM II IWAD on the right hand panel to highlight it.
  16. Click Launch and the game will start.
  17. GZDoom's launcher will pop up. If you have a fairly modern graphics card, select Vulkan as the renderer in the Video Settings section at the bottom-left. Under Extra Graphics at the bottom-right, check Lights and Brightmaps. Lights are required for this map pack to look correct.

That should do it! We hope you enjoy the maps we have so far, and we look forward to bringing you more of them!
