The Byzantine Empire began when the Roman Empire split into the Western and Eastern Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire was huge. The countries it occupied were:Portugal,Spain,Italy,Almost The Entire Balkan Penninsula,Turkey,A Big Part Of The Middle East and a part of Northern Africa. The Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire together started the crusades so they can retake the holy land. But then came the Ottoman Turks who took over the Byzantine Empire and that was the end of the Byzantine Empire. But then after about 7 centuries, the Ottoman Empire collapses after World War 1 and now, The Byzantine Republic returns!

I think a democratic start would be good because you have a fascist demagogue advisor so you can change into fascist and so that you have more to do but i will make a fascist start version.
