Okay, gave it a test run with the latest version of Brutal Doom. Here's what I think.

Overall, I like it. The classic vanilla sounds are SOOOOOO tired after more than a decade of play. They're low-quality, and quite grating honestly. Doom 3's sound effects are technically superior, and in most cases artistically superior as well.

However, there's too much dissonance between the Doom 3 sounds and the remaining, unaltered vanilla sounds. Don't know if it's intentional, but monsters like Imps have untouched, normal pain sounds that clash very badly with the retouched sound style. It also doesn't address one of my biggest complaints with Brutal Doom: the god-awful "IIURGH IIRUGH IIURGH" repetition from wounded enemies. Ugh. God, that's so very bad. If you can replace those sounds with something less annoying, I'd be a happy, happy camper.

I'm glad that you didn't go crazy with the volume like so many people do with this sort of thing, but that said, I find pretty much every sound to be much too quiet. A bit of a volume boost would be appreciated.

In conclusion, I'm dropping a positive rating. I want to see more of this, and I really like it. If the old sounds could be completely replaced, it'd be even better. Zombies sound much more imposing when they sound like demonically-possessed sacks of meat, and few things can beat the muffled roar the pinky demons issue when they charge. I was saddened when Sarge rolled back Doom 3 audio. It's good to see it making a comeback. Thanks.

Imps have been fixed, now its just Pain Elemental, Arachnotron, and Mastermind who was absent from Doom 3, I guess it all comes down to someone coming up with their own sounds for them.

Um, for some reason Sergeants still have their original sounds, any way to fix this?

Might I ask why the Imps have generic feline sounds? I'm about 99% sure that they didn't have those in DOOM 3 at all.

Just being curious.

Now that the mod has been updated, I can unequivocally recommend it for download. Even if Doom 3 isn't your cup of tea, its creature soundscape is undeniably awesome and terrifying.

Couple this with the footstep mod of your choice, and a good selection of dark ambient music (Doom 64 is a great choice), and you've got yourself one heck of a powerful atmosphere.

Well done!

I've never left a review on moddb before, but i had to leave my review after playing with this mod for several hours. I really wouldn't think i'd have found these monster sounds to add all that much to the Doom 2 experience but they REALLY do!! I love the extra level of "horror" these sounds provide and since they all came from the existing monsters "3" counterparts they seem to fit the various monster's personalities very well!! My ONLY gripe is that i'd love to see even MORE of the Doom 2 monster's grunts and groans replaced so that there is no disjoint between the two. Also, i think there might be a slight delay on some of the "shot" sounds that remove a bit of the "umph" when you shoot them and i'm hoping this can be tightened up a bit. Otherwise, this is a GREAT mod and works VERY well with brutal doom!! Thank you thank you!!

I don't really like Doom 3 but the sounds are good plus I don't mind if there are old sounds combined in fact I like it more. I don't want complete new sounds, I love the old sounds and it's nice to hear them here and there.

what are both files for? What does each of them do? What are the differences?

I LOVE THESE! Thank you so much!! I've yet to spot flaws. I'm finding the sounds perfectly fitting, and they definitely contribute to an overall improved atmosphere. They don't have to be 100% modern, they've been adjusted to fit just beautifully.

I might just as well voice one other concern: blood. I've tried Droplets and Nice Blood On The Walls, but the former gave little difference (seeing as I have Japanese Cartoon mode in Project Brutality, and I don't use Janitor), and I didn't get any added blood options in the menu; and the latter gave differing wall blood texture than other blood particles, kind of looked weird.

I'm enjoying being part of this community as of late, and I hope to be able to give back with whatever I manage to put together. Main target is of course map packs. If I ever make it into the modders corner, well, blood will be my perfect excuse. I know we all need HD blood.
