Run. Think. Shoot. Live. Source. Black Mesa is the Half-Life 2 total conversion of the original Half-Life game. Utilizing the Source engine and its endless array of possibilities and powers, Black Mesa will throw you into the world that started the Half-Life continuum and introduced Gordon Freeman to the world as a gun-toting, bullet-dodging Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics.

No, sorry, it's not. It's based in an underground government facility in Mesa, Nevada.

Excellent, the skybox is just perfect!

And I love the idea to remake the screen like the HL1 one, with the apache firing rockets and the grunt on the bridge :)

Did you make the skybox, take photos of it, then convert it into a skybox texture?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
cman2k Author
cman2k - - 53 comments

no. that is real 3d geometry, not a fake flat texture. It's made of displacements using some unique workflow & tools. You'll be able to tell even more in motion, since you see it from different vertical altitudes.

I was really focused on how you guys approached the background so it's not the same as HL-1 graphically.

I just got hard. Nuff said.

In Source, you can create 3d skyboxes by making items/geography/models in 1/16th scale so it uses less resources.

In other words, the mesa's them self where made in hammer in the same map as the playable area is.

Looks great, awesome use of the skybox camera.

The level of talent is overwhelming, you should seriously consider profesional 3D Modeling as a career.

I'd like to talk with the leader of this mod.

i think my favorite part of this scene is the BRIDGE, simply amazing brushwork they got going there, with a mixture of those hl2 wooden plank props. musta been a pain in the butt to make.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
Stormseeker
Stormseeker - - 172 comments

Well, I made the bridge originally out of brushes to get the shape and positions etc, then DXF converted it and passed it onto a modeller to convert it. Currently it's a placeholder until we get a higher resolution texture on it. This was a shot I put together over a weekend for PCGamer, but they didn't get it in time, so the bridge was fairly quickly put in.

The osprey was in concept/prototype phase of production when HL was made, sot that is why it had door in the sides, not the back.
