French army
Damn
one of the worst ever produced tanks during the history of tanks...
Why? :D
Moving Iron Crypt
at least it worked
not really, stuck in trenchs like the rest of the soldiers during the first world war
You will be surprised, but we have only two actual trench warfare missions in French single player campaign out of total eight missions. World War I was not completely about trenches, the problem is just that most of the people are very narrow-minded and they only think of trenches in ww1. In reality, however the war was much more complex - even reading a lot of books and watching tons of documentaries will not get you a whole overview of the war. I have spent years on researching WW1 and only now I am getting overall picture of the war.
PS
Although I have to admit that French heavy tanks of WW1 had quiet inadequate design, but that was the common problem for all of the heavy tanks in that period. It took another 50 years and second World War to develop the concept of the main battle tank, which combines speed, armor and firepower - even in ww2 most of the tanks were quiet unbalanced.
I hope, that you don't think, that I am narrow-minded, because I said, that they stuck in trenches like the rest of the soldiers. It was a mataphor, which shows, that the design was so screwed-up, that the tank stuck in trenches and bomb craters. My knowledge about World-History is very well, and I have to live with the history, because I am from Germany, so I have to face the history every second I visit another country, like the UK or the USA. If you tell the people in those countrys, that you are from Germany, they only think of one thing, so I know, whos narrow-minded. Maybe not everyone in those countrys have prejudices, but the most have prejudices. And I didnt thought, that you are a little bit lordly, arent you?
Anyway, this is a great mod and I voted this mod, of course.
I am not lordly. I just don't like statements without a proof. And I was a bit insulted by your not-so-funny jokes about French army. This was not nice at all.
By the way, I have nothing against Germany or Germans. In my opinion this is great country. I have started to study Deutsch lately actually, but I am at the very beginning right now. Deutschland ist sehr gut und schön Land =)
I think, the statement, that the tanks stuck in trenches in true, isnt it?^^ Anyway, I wish you good luck, learning German is very hard. :)
At the first battle in Summer 1917, where this tank was used, all 16 models stuck at obstacles and couldn't move anymore. The consequence was, that this model was useless. After the 400 ordered vehicles where build, the production was stopped in early spring of 1918.
Well no, they were not «useless» (and that’s a conclusion, not a consequence). The French kept using them extensively until the end of the war, even after receiving better models (it took time for the production lines to start churning out enough Renault FTs). Having a bad tank > not having any tank.
The St Chamond was a bad and inadequate design which made it impossible to operate in mildly difficult terrain without the support of trained infantry. Ironically, when WW1 became mobile again in summer 1918, with most combat taking place beyond trench networks, the St Chamond’s greater speed and heavy gun gave it a hedge.
Ok, but if the tank was driving fast, the electric motors were getting hot. So the motors were unreliable. Even though it was a fast tank, it was still unreliable. True, isn't it? ;)
None of the tanks used in WW1 were reliable, so that’s a rather unconvincing argument.
The electrical transmissions were perhaps too modern an implementation. It made the tank heavier and more costly. It was undeniably an operational advantage though. The St Chamond could be easily steered and manoeuvred by its driver. In comparison the Mark IV required the coordination of 3 crewmen to turn and change gear, and the Mk A “Whippet” had to be stopped to change directions or one of the engines would stall.
If you intend to learn more about the subject I recommend Lawrynovicz’s “Schneider CA St. Chamond” book (unless you can read French, in which case there are better alternatives) as a wiki page is seriously not a sufficient source of information.
Finally I’ll point out that this tank saw more than 400 engagements during the war. This alone points at the tank not being useless, no matter how bad a design it was.
