Ancient Kings is a mod to famed Crusader Kings II, providing players the opportunity to go back to the violent times of Antiquity. The mod takes place between Battle of Ipsus (301 BC), which saw the final dissolution of Alexander the Great's empire, as far as to 610 AD, when Emperor Heraclius got rid of the last remnant of old Roman Empire - official Latin. The mod will offer varied gameplay, allowing players to take role of Roman consuls during Third Roman-Samnite war or one of the diadochi on their quest to resurrect Alexander's empire, to pick sides in Carthage's and Rome's conflict during Second Punic War, to fight as one of the tribes during Ceasar's subjugation of Gaul or to choose to support either Mark Antony or Octavian Augustus during the Final War of the Roman Republic. The mod is currently WIP, but I try to improve its state regularly, while also providing that it's as realistic and historically accurate as it can be.

Mercenary groups that will be included in Ancient Kings.

Total conversion to antiquity means also converting mercenaries. Antiquity had its famous mercenary groups, such as famed Cretan Archers or Balearic Slingers. I decided to make a list of those mercenary groups that will be included in the mod.

Already included:

  • Cretan Archers (composed wholly of archers)
  • Balearic Slingers (composed wholly of range units)
  • Agrianian Peltasts (as vassals of Macedon, composed wholly of light infantry)
  • Tarantine Cavalry (composed of light cavalry and mounted range units)
  • Rhodian Slingers (composed wholly of ranged units)

Planned:

  • Cretan Pirates (mercenary ships and perhaps a group of light infantry and archers also)
  • Thessalian Cavalry (light/heavy cavalry, vassals of Macedon)
  • Ionian Mercenary Fleet (mercenary ships)
  • various Hoplites (heavy infantry) - perhaps also some kind of decision enabling the recreation of famed Ten Thousand
  • Medjay (nubian light infantry, vassals of Egypt)
  • Illyrian mercenaries, but not jest specified
  • Galatian warbands (after settling in Galatia)
  • Thynoi, Bessoi & Dioi warbands (thracian heavy/light infantry)
  • Mamertines (italian heavy cavalry/light infantry from Campania)
  • Leukosyroi (hellenistic anatolian light infantry)
  • Sintian Pirates (thracian mercenary ships + heavy/light infantry)
  • Trallian Barbarians (possibly illyrian heavy/light infantry)
  • Massylii and Masaesyli warbands (numidian mounted range units)
  • various Roman Auxilias, including Sarmatian Cavalry (in the Imperial era)
  • various foederati (late antiquity)

Feel free to add any sugestions, especially for barbarian mercenaries (I'm looking for more specific ideas, i.e. members of what tribes often joined mercenary hosts).

The Kingdom of Numidia usually supllied mercenaries to Roman wars, also Julius Caesar mad extensive use of German Cavalry during his wars, mainly Suebiis, who fought on pairs,a cavalry unit supplemented by light infantry.Mithridates used Scythian and Sarmatian horsemen for the last part of his war against Rome. The Persians hired light horsemen from the fringes of their empire.Egypt hired Nubian light infantry and cavalry. If I recall more I'll post them here

Numidians you refer two were two kingdoms of Massylii and Masaesyli that I already mentioned above. Also Medjay are those Nubian forces Egypt hired. About the rest however I didn't know, I'll have to do more research and include them. Thanks!

Numidians were basically forced by Rome to give them men for wars,as a kind of tribute.Same applies for the Nubians regarding Egypt.Maybe make them a special unit that can be raised in the area?Such as Varangians or Mamluks

Varangians and Mamluks are not special in any manner, save for the fact that they're vassal mercenaries. Nubian Medjay, as I mentioned above, are from the start vassals of Kingdom of Egypt. Numidians however, before they were subjugated by Rome, were independent and they were famed for their mercenaries.
If you're curious, I thought about implementing (somehow) tributary state system (just as I thought to implement formal alliances and other treaties rather than those marriage-based ones), which could grant some part of tributary state's income and perhaps add some part of it's forces to overall protector state's levy. Either that, or simply the tributary state will be sort of semi-independent vassal.
