Amazing work! Especially, that on normal maps. They look so clean and sharp! Can you please release twice the resolution of this set? At least for all the tech stuff like walls, and floors, and doors.

too late, already did most of the work in x2 :-D
i dont have an nvidia gpu so i have to do each folder manually

i decided to make them in x2 because some textures look weird even in x4
if the rest of the textures were x4 as well, they would look out of place

theoretically you could find the right AI model for each of those textures so they would all look good...
maybe i'll completely rework the mod in x4 some time in the distant future - no promises!

That'd be great! Looking forward to it! Meantine, I can help with GPU rendering capacities, if you point me to the right model and settings.

ok so i just tested x4 textures - they don't actually add much detail, just sharpness up close
i recommend using reshade DELC sharpen shaders instead to raise overall sharpness instead. performance-wise x4 should still be fine on modern systems, but the main problem is that downlscaling actually hides some artifacting =)
here's the comparison of what you can expect from x4:
postimg.cc/3yMfMQ67
it does have the potential to look better (if done right), but i dont think x4 is worth the effort. i'm pretty happy with how the mod turned out already - if it's not enough, you can always use it as a base to install other HD mods on top of. this mod is meant to just get rid of jagged pixels

however, if you're willing to try and test (and maybe make a higher quality upscaling mod) here are the models i used:
- most textures - 4x_Fatality_MKII_90000_G (good results for both normals and diffuse, mind the blurriness and artifacting)
- textures that needed to keep the original color but have sharp detail, mostly tech stuff and normals - 4xTextSharpV1
- some diffuse maps that needed less blurriness - 4x_Fatality_01_375000_G
- good for specular maps - 4xSGI_103000_G
- textures that needed to be the most faithful to the original to keep detail - 4x_FuzzyBox (sometimes used in TTA mode)
- a few diffuse maps that needed major extrapolation - 4x_RealSR_DF2K_JPEG
- hell flesh growths - realesrgan-x4plus
- also used 4x_BSRGAN, reboutblend, 4x_PixelPerfectV4_137000_G situationally
dont remember where i downloaded them - just the names, but shouldn't be too hard to search em
i had to mix results between 2 models in photoshop sometimes
keep in mind that normalmaps (_local) and often have an alpha channel that can sometimes create issues when upscaling - namely, when upscaling with NCNN and then resizing after upscaling - cause it deletes all color data for alpha masked regions. even if that region is used in game! somehow the game ignores alpha channels from the original normalmaps.
no idea how that works, and i dont get why normalmaps and specularmaps even need an alpha channel, so i often simply deleted it before upscaling :-DDDD
dont delete the diffuse map alphas obviously!
ESRGAN NCNN seems to not upscale alpha channel, so i had to use PyTorch in CPU mode on some textures.
unless you use NCNN, all that headache shouldn't be a problem for NVIDIA users
also, some TGA files get flipped in Cupscale (the program i used), even with "TGA: Apply rotation fix" option enabled, so keep an eye on that
i could probably avoid most of these problems and not have to fix them manually, but im a noob and this is my first major upscaling project
and!! if youre gonna use cupscale with nvidia and want to keep folder system functionality, it seems that youll have to use 1.37.0. maybe newer versions will fix it
some say gigapixel ai is better but i havent tried it yet

that's all i know

Thank you for this comprehensive reply! What a work done!
I see your point with 4x textures scale. However, I kindly ask to al least consider making 4x normal maps, 'cause these are even more important for the HD look, than diffuse textures.Another reason for doing this is that higher-res textures (any of them) can serve as a good base for future improvements by other enthusiasts (like myself) in whatever image editing software of preference.

It is better that you do this, with all the axperience you've gathered! And this will ensure consitency of the outcomes.

So, once again, please consider 4x upscale release, at least for normal maps!

Hi! I tried Cupscale with all the models you've listed, and I tried Gigapixel, too, but I cannot get nearly as good result as yours.

Please see if you can find time to make 4x upscales of normal maps only, cause they define how detailed surfaces or models look. Using a high-res normal even with a default low-res texture makes a surface look way better!

Definitely the best texture set for Doom 3. No sacrificing of the authentic detail, or adding some preposterously tacky effects. Excellent work.
