Valdis Story: Abyssal City

Game review

Originally I gave this game an 8 out of 10. Upon realizing how much fun I was having during my second play-through, I realized that was too low. Valdis Story: Abyssal City is a fantastic offering from a small indie studio, with gameplay that strikes a perfect balance between side-scrolling action, RPG strategy, exploration, and platforming.

Are there some problems? Sure. Fighting enemies on small platforms is frustrating as your character tends to go flying off the edge during combat. Dodges are too limited. The learning curve is steep. The plot could have gone a lot deeper into the characters, their relations, development, etc.

But there's too much going for Valdis Story: Abyssal City to let those problems get in the way. Suddenly realizing that there's a test of intelligence hidden behind the frantic action of a boss fight is greatly rewarding. Choosing your upgrades and gear leads to surprisingly unique character builds. The graphics and music add a lot to the experience. Valdis Story: Abyssal City provides many hours of exciting RPG strategy and side-scrolling action.
