In 1942 the development of KV-13 has started. Intended to be faster and better armored than KV-1S, KV-13 was made full-cast from metal, giving it greater resistance to penetrations than the welded KV-1. With the appearance of German Tiger and Panther the components and experiences of KV-13 were used for the IS tank.
Designated as "heavily armored medium tank", KV-13 was supposedly a larger cousin of T-34 who was a reason for the decline of the KV series. Armed with the 76mm gun, it was the same armament of the KV-1S (and T-34), giving it a decent penetration against German tank armors. KV-13 is with KV-122 a true predecessor of IS-1 and IS-2.
