Unless you live on the other side of the world. It'll be seven in the morning where I am.

As others have mentioned, it doesn't matter who makes the games, as long as the games are good.

That being said, I voted for Valve as they are doing so much more than simply make great games; they're awesome in supporting the mod scene, they're starting to put more indie games on Steam, they're a steadfast supporter of PC gaming in an age where most others are calling it dead, and they're willing and able to innovate- they take risks to push gaming to levels never seen before.

Also, the Oddworld series. :)

v.dog - - 15 comments @ From the signature weapons listed, which one is your favorite?

The portal 'gun' is not a weapon per se- it was designed with shower curtains in mind, not killing people.
However, that there's *nothing* else like it when it comes to using your environment as a weapon (not to mention it's ability to be used for instantaneous transport, or that it makes a fantastic shower curtain (try *that* with your AWP)) means it gets my vote.

The poll would also be better if the developers and publishers of non-moddable actually read it.

v.dog - - 15 comments @ Honestly speaking, I'm attracted to mods that have:

IMO, realism isn't always fun. The best games are the hyper-real; they take the laws of the real world and tune them to the way we would like them to be (eg shooting someone and watch them going flying through the air), and ignore mundane trivialities (like having to eat).

New or existing universes are only good if they're compelling, and that comes through in the story in a way that makes you feel like you're really there. Picking a mod because of the universe in and of itself doesn't mean you'll get to fully experience it or actually enjoy it.

Pretty pictures are meaningless unless there's actually a good game underneath.

Of the options listed, I'd say original gameplay wins hands down. I've always liked new and interesting ideas, and while it doesn't automatically make for a good game, that the developer is willing to challenge the status quo can only be a good thing- somewhere out there, the next Portal or Crayon Physics Deluxe is waiting. Even if it is a dog, hopefully the concept will spark other ideas- what if we did this instead- and produce more awesome things.

Not at all. I can create an entirely new universe about aliens called Xug and still make the same old corridor shooter we've been playing since Doom.

A new universe is only good if the story of it comes through in a compelling way.

Sad to say, my first impressions of this mod are not good. I had to noclip to find my way out of the first map- there needs to be an indication as to which tunnel you can go down, after trying the first couple and finding them locked, it's easy to just look at the last four and think they're locked too.

Also, loading the second map causes it to crash with the Engine Error "Unable to load manifest file 'scripts/soundscapes_manifest.txt'", followed by a crash in the HL2.exe.

Who'da thunk it? Garry's mod is the new CS.

While I'm sad that it'll no longer be free, it's good that new and inovative mods are being recognised by Valve, and their developers are being rewarded for thir efforts. Overall, it makes the Source modding community a better place.

Congrats, Gaz.

I'm forbidden too, as of this morning. I could get to the flash main page if I typed in the full URL, but now I can't seem to get even that far.:(
