Reading few comments got me interested...

Since this seems to go the original HW2 rock-paper-scissors style. Make sure to add few big capitals focused on anti-fighter role, ofc toothless against anti-capital big guys but able to withstand lot of punishment to stay with the fleet.

As for point defences, theres no need to riddle ships with turrets, just make sure they are there. And by that i mean shooting. Rates of fire were slooooow in HW, drop the per-shot damage and increase the rof. Make em look like they are doing something.

Im also hoping big ships last a long while. It takes mere few shots to for a heavy cruiser to down another. These need to be more of "battles" instead of petty fights. Big long slugfests.
For this, the ships need LOTS more "soft spots" for fighters to take down. You can eighter watch the slugfest unfold OR actually add strategy, not mass/numbers and take out those soft-spots.
While fighters are toothless against a hwy-cruiser, bombers could still criple it for a long while. As in the soft-spots need longer re-spawn time, in vanilla the spots repair as fast as you can shoot em.
